*********8 Is a Ford Taurus of sufficient size to trailer the C22 over hills for up to 100 miles? Will the Taurus work for launching and hauling out of the water...it's front wheel drive. Thanks!

tow the line

Without a doubt a Ford Taurus will pull a trailer with a catalina 22. BUT think about this: if you are going up hills the weight of the boat/trailer will put ENORMOUS loads on the transmission. You would definitely need an auxilary transmission cooler. Front wheel drive transmissions are genteally not heavy duty. Next: does the trailer have brakes? If not then the weight (159 lbs with a full tank of gas?!)) of the Tarus and its meager braking power will be needed to stop the boat/trailer (minimum 2500lbs). Braking downhill will not be fun. Launching at the ramp, I would say the Tarus would do this, but a long distance trip over hills with a Tarus would not be prudent. Borrow or rent a larger vehicle. The rental cost will be much cheaper than a future transmission job on the Tarus.

In a word. . . No.

The Taurus is rated to tow up to 2,000 lbs. Your boat plus trailer weighs in at around 3,300 lbs (boat is about 2,250). Try the Explorer instead of the Taurus. Regards, Ted

Don't kill the Taurus

Given that you live in the vicinity of Lake Ontario, you should be able to find any number of older Jeep Cherokees that are 6 cylinder with automatic transmissions. Check to make sure that it has a 4.0 liter engine. That should give you enough power to tow up to 5000 pounds without too much trouble. As the owner of two I can say that they just keep on going and have the raw power to do what you want. Ideally, you may want one with 4 wheel drive to really power your way up the ramp, and in the winter its good for when the weather is really bad.
