Trailering 170 -- with motor on mount or off?

My wife and I sailed our 2000 170 all summer without a motor and got along reasonably well, given our venues. I want to purchase a long-shaft Honda 2.5 hp for next summer. I am curious whether trailering the 170 with the motor attached to the mount can be done. The mount does not appear to be strong enough to withstand the bumps of the road with 28 lbs. of motor hanging on it. If trailering with the motor mounted is not a good idea, any suggestions for carrying it?

I have trailed it with a Yamaha 2HP motor mounted and no problems so far. I agree the motor mount should be a more substantial design. Since you are concerned, why not just keep the motor in the back of your car?

only for short distances

It's probably OK to leave the motor on for short distances, over smooth roads. Otherwise, I would take it off and put it in your vehicle. It might be a good idea to rig up a spot on the trailer, under the boat for the motor. Be sure to lock it up wherever it is.

I built a mount

I built a really inexpensive mount when I had my 170 because I didn't like the thought of it bouncing around while trailering. The mount consisted of a piece of 2X6 that was bolted to the mast support. The motor mounts on it the same way that it mounts to the motor mount, but it faces the other way. Very sturdy. Have a drawing or two of it if you'd like to see it.

Your suggestion to build a bracket attached to the mast support is a great idea. I'd appreciate seeing a drawing -- let's connect. My e-mail is russ8642@aol.com

Great Idea!

I'd love to see your drawing. I've been keeping the motor in my vehicle, actually replacement motor after first was stolen when I averted attention for a few minutes in Texas. I tried carrying on motor mount but some roads are just too rough for that and I had to stop often to check it out. My E-mail is riversmith@aol.com.
