Looking to purchase a H270 (H260 w keel and inboard). I own a Ford Exdedition SUV with 5.0 V8. Its rated to tow 7500 lbs. The Hunter web site states that the H270 is 5000 lbs. I was at the Providence RI boat show and the dealer said the H270 was not trailerable? Is anyone trailering one of these? Catalina has a similar boat C250 wing keel with inboard that weighs the same and they claim the 250wk is trailerable?

I think that the beam of the boat would preclude it from trailering without special permits in most if not all states. That is probably why the dealer said it was not a trailer sailor. By the way, the Catalina 25 I used to own was an 8ft. beam and had a trailer. I would not have liked to trailer and set that boat up on a regular basis. If you want to trailer I would probably go with the H 240 .

H270 not trailerable? That's Nonesense!
I own a 2000 Hunter 270 and it is presently sitting on its trailer at the Edgewood Yacht Club in Cranston, RI and I can tell you that you most certainly CAN trailer it. I tow Escape Velocity with my Dodge Durango SLT and a weight distributing hitch. My 270 sails so fine! and behaves like a real lady on the road. In fact, my first day with the boat, my wife and I trailered her by ourselves in the middle of the night during a thunderstorm from Cape Code to Cranston, RI doing approximately 65 down I-195 and she didn't so much as sway! John-the beam is the issue, to tow it with out permits it must be 102" or less,Don'tknow the beam on the 270 but I think it is over. you can if fact tow the boat the question is if you want to be legal or bother with permits and where and how often you plan on towing it. The fine for overwidth can be pretty stiff. Check with your local police, the usualy have a truck officer who could help you with the legal issue.Your tow vehicle would do a nice job of pulling it! Trailering Permits??
If the 270 is the same width as the 260, many of us 260 owners have trailered our boats and never gotten permits or been hassled about it. Technically the width of the 260 might be over the width limit in some states , but I have never had the issue come up. I wouldn't ask since you may be told you need a permit. Don't know the fine if you are caught, but I doubt anyone will notice. I see a lot of big power boats being trailered and they seem to be about the same width as the 260. Your choice and good luck!

If the boat is 5000 lbs, what about the traler it has to be at least 1500 lbs. Add gear water waste and all the other stuff. Your getting to that 7000 lbs quickly. And do you want to tow at your truck max????

waterballast vs. keel
I own a 26 (older version of a 260) and sail with a friend who has a 260 keel (before they called it a 270). The keel version is definately more stable (less tender) and can take about 5 knotts of wind more before being reefed. However, the swing keel water ballasted version draws only 1'9" with the rudder and centerboard up so it can go into real shallow areas. My friend and I do not trailer but It certainly must be easier to do so in the swing keel as there is much less draft and you dump 2000lbs of water ballast. Consider your likes and dislikes, how much you will be trailering and where you will be sailing and then balance it out. Alan
