Hi Mark. Check with Toyota about what the 4 runner can pull. Figure around 10,000 lbs boat assrted equipment and trailer weight. You might find someone willing to rent you a trailer. Or you might have one custom built. Good luck. Walt

I'm almost ready to purchase Vega. I'm looking for one with the trailer.I'm in AZ. Anybody knows where to find the trailer for this boat. Also, is Toyota 4Runner with (8cyl engine) strong enough to pull the boat? Thanks,Mark

I pull my Vega and Trailer (about 9000 lbs) with a Dodge 3/4 ton
Cummins diesel. It does fine. Before I got the diesel, I brought it
back from the marina with a Dodge gas truck and it was really under
powered. I would suspect that the tow capacity of the Toyota is not
enough for the Vega and Trailer.

An alternative to a boat trailer, though perhaps not as
convenient, is to build a cradle and place that on an equipment
trailer, the type used for backhoes. A picture of such an
arrangement is in the files section here, and plans for a cradle can
be found at the American Vega Assn. website. Open the VORM (Vega
owner's repair manual) and look under "miscellanea".

I recently saw a trailer on Craigs list, used for $1600 that was made
for a farm tractor. I would think such a trailer could be fitted with a
home made cradle if you are willing to build one. Even if you are not
all that handy with tools a cradle is pretty crude and there are plans
available in the boat manual. That doesn't seem all that hard to me. Dougj.hunter9999 wrote:

Does anyone have recommendations about buying or building a trailer?
I would prefer to buy one, either new or used. If I build, what are the key dimensions for supports for keel and hull?

I am not planning long hauls, mainly winter storage.

Ideally, I could use it to launch on the long sloped beach that has 12 foot tides. 2425 is in Desolation Sound.

Thanks

The dimensions for a shipping cradle are in the "Miscellanea" section of the VORM at the American Vega Association website. Might help some.

Patrick, I bought an old double axle power boat trailer that was fitted
with rollers and modified it to carry a Vega. I simply went and
measured an existing Vega cradle for the location of the four pads - and
used a piece of channel iron for the full length of the keel to rest on.
I will not see the trailer until mid September but could take some
measurements then if you like? Email me off-group at leecht@....
No digital camera - or I'd post some pics - sorry. Trevor V2915

John,
I have a custom built trailer that came with my Vega. Instead of jack stands, they actually built support rails. The trailer seems very heavy duty. I have pictures of it up on my website www.ric-maxfield.net If you are wanting something like it, I can provide you the dimensions.

John,
I posted a diagram up on my website, as well as a few more pictures of sections of the trailer. Between the pictures already posted, the new pictures and the diagram I think you can get what you need. If you need any further detail, send me an email directly with you phone number and I will give you a call.
