I am looking for lakes to go to to get away from the summer heat. I live in south Louisiana and would like to find some lakes to go to that may be 12 hours driving time from me. I have a Hunter 23.5 on a trailer and would like to get away for a week or so. Can some of yall sailors tell me your favorite lake to go to. Lakes in Arkansas, Mississippi, Tenn, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, etc.

thanks

Butch

KY lake

Kentucky lake which is in both Kentucky and Tennessee offers very good sailing, but if you want to get away from the heat you'll need to go further north. Not uncommon to see temperatures in the high 90's this time of the year.

Lake DeGray in Arkansas rocks. Its a great place to sail. But summer time might not be much different from what you got. Lake Superior however, will rock your world.

Hey T

I don't know if any of those places will get you out of the LA heat. I'd suggest Charleston SC. It is 13 hours and the breeze off the ocean will keep you nice and cool. The harbor is very nice with a Farmer's market and many shops right on the water. Where do you sail now? I've spent a lot of time in Vermillion Bay (Boston Bayou and Cypremort Pt.) Your boat is perfect for that sort of sailing.

Another place I've also wanted to sail is Navarre Beach near Pensicola FL. That is very close to you and there is a nice protected body of water there behind a barrier island. Good steady wind to keep you cool.

I sail at cypremort point and I have a condo in Pensacola beach and ft. Walton beach. I will be headed to Pensacola beach in a few weeks and will be leaving my boat b there for the rest of the summer. I have a generator and a/c for it so I can make the nights comfortable.

That sounds really nice. We vacationed in a condo on Navare Beach a few years ago and I rented a Hobie Cat and spent a day bumming the water between Navarre and Pensacola. I'd love to spend a week or two there in my boat.

I know it is a bit long of a drive for you but a really nice place for a Hunter 23 would be to sail out of Oriental NC and head up to Ocracoke Island. If you could get away in September it would be about perfect (need to dodge Hurricanes but the weather is great that time of year.).

Allied Seawind MK II 32' Oologah Lake, Oklahoma
Northeast Oklahoma has Oologah Lake and Grand Lake o' the Cherokees. Oologah has good sailing but no real "destinations". Grand has quite a bit of water to cover and probably close to a dozen marinas on the lake to visit. It also has a large population of big power boats, big house boats and the jet skis are like water bugs.

I'm thinking you might have to go more than 12 hours to get any significant heat relief though.

If you were closer, Lake Michigan has some of the best sailing in the midwest. Clear blue water, no shoals, no lobster pots, no hurricanes, good temps, nice beaches, great harbors every 6 miles along the Michigan coast. Come up and rent a boat! Leave yours at home.

Lake Huron

Lake Huron is the best escape. Drive up to Ontario and put into the north channel. Clear water, pink granite out croppings, cool nights, protected anchorages, pine scented breezes, and if you get thirsty, you can drink straight from the lake. Other places have their charms, but nothing has it all like the North Channel of Lake Huron.

We kept our boat here for about three years, and it's a great sailing lake. The problem with any inland lake in the summer, though, is lack of a good reliable breeze.

Alabama and the other states you mentioned are going to be just as hot in the summer as where you are now. I say stay somewhere on the coast where you can at least count on the sea breeze.

You might want to consider doing the inland waterway in the lower peninsula of Michigan for an adventure. We started near Conway, MI on Crooked Lake (close to Petoskey), to Crooked River to Burt Lake, to Indian River back to a lake (Mullett Lake), to finally hit the Cheboygan River and come out on Lake Huron at Cheboygan on the eastern side of the state. About five years ago, my wife and I did this route - took about 5 or 6 days if I remember right. We then continued on to the Straights of Mackinac (sailed under Mackinac bridge so we could say we were in Lake Michigan). We brought the boat out at Mackinaw City where the marina had transient slips (no room on Mackinac Island although we sailed into the harbor several times and around the island one day before pulling the trailering). We did this on a Hunter 216. Was a great trip and adventure. Without a galley or overnight accommodations on our 216, we used hotels and lodges along the way for overnighting and ate off boat in the towns we passed. If you consider this, you will need to check the locks along the way for clearance (one is a 'clam type' of lock). We needed to bring our mast down (there is a yoke on the 216 for laying the mast on) while keeping the bottom pinned. Worked well for us and we thought it was worth the effort. Anyone considering the Michigan Inland Waterway, should find a copy of "Navigation Charts of the Inland Route and the Straits of Mackinac" (Mapping Unlimited, 6235 Crystal Springs Road, Bellaire, MI 49615). I also had located a book that described taking the route 20+ years previous (power boat) but many of the same restaurants and information applied. Sorry can't remember the name of the book. Fun trip, cool temps, great scenery, good food and lodging. By the way, I normally sail on the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities area (Moline, IL - Davenport, IA). It would be an experience and fun too but temps in summer are in the 80's-100's.

Ok, the North Channel of Lake Huron trumps Lake Michigan. :)

re: Trailer sailor looking looking for summer spots to spend a week

Sailing the Rock Mountains is really your best bet. Some of the higher lakes are at 9000' above sea level. The air is dry and the evening temps drop dramatically. The afternoon sun is comfortably warm, and the breezes are always cool. Among the top are Flathead Lake in Montana, Jackson Lake and Fremont Lake in Wyoming, Bear Lake in Utah, Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho, and Dillon and Grandby Lakes in Colorado. Also there are a many smaller lakes with stunning scenery, quiet campgrounds and exciting sailing.
The larger lakes will have full-service marinas with slip rentals and sailing clubs holding open races throughout the summer. The Rockies are the place to go for cool sailing.

Lake Lavon, west of Plano TX, in the little town on Wylie, is the best sailing lake in the Great State of Texas!!! 23000 Sq acres of water, you can do a 4.5 mi run across from Collin Park Marina to the dam, they about a 7.25 mile run up the east side of the lake.

Great coves to anchor and swim, good wind, not a busy lake like others in Texas.

Go North and up in elevation if you are looking for relief from the heat. Just got back from NO and Biloxi and the days were mostly hovering around 92-93F. The humidity did not feel as bad as here in Tampa but with those temperatures it felt hotter. If you can push to the Atlantic Ocean you'll find the breezes and water temperature more soothing. The good thing about a trailerable sailboat is that you are also hauling a fully equiped camper and it is convenient to spen a night at a campground or even at an interstate rest stop. Stay away from truckers running generators.

Don't forget lake Ray Hubbard, about 30 minutes east of Dallas. We have great sailing and several destinations like The Harbor in Rockwall and the Bass Pro complex in Garland which feature a lot of nice bars and restaurants, even a movie theater you can sail up to. Right now we have Dallas Race Week going on which is the sailing event in North Texas. As far as temperature goes it's hot in the summer and less breezy but spring and fall sailing is awesome.

Ditto, on Lake Champlain. Lots of places to anchor. (I haven't been to the North Channel yet, though)
