I'm in the process of overhauling my C22's trailer. The trailer is an older Trail Rite that is very difficult to get the boat's swing keel to line up with the keel rest when pulling the boat out of the water. Has anyone had any luck adding some type of keel guide to their trailer that wouldn't involve a lot of $$$$?

trailer guide

When I bought my 79 C22 the previous owner had installed two V shaped stainless bars/bolts on the trailer, he bent them, in front of the grove that the keel slides into. One on each side. The stainless bar or long bolt had two PVC pipe sections around it one a larger diamater than the other so they telescoped inside each other and turned easier when rubbed and provided a larger surface. I find they work great, you definately know when your in or out of alignment, and getting in approximately right is good enough as they help guide you into place.

Keel guide

Doug; When I had my C22 on the trailer, I made up a keel guide using 3 inch angle iron and some four by four lumber. I fabricated and welded it on myself, but you could have something done at any trailer repair shop. A guide makes it so easy to get the boat centered. Have your keel about halfway down when you come on to the trailer so you don't ride up over the guides.

I'll send you some photos

Doug: I just e-mailed some photos to Tom and Dee on this same thing a few days ago. Send me your e-mail address, and I'll forward the message to you. I made my guide out of 1 1/2 dia. PVC sewer type pipe. I only have a guide on the port side of the trailer. No matter what material you make your guide from, you definitely do want to add a guide to your trailer.
