I find myself occasionally climbing around in my trailered boat in the back yard... fixing things, maintaining things, inventing or improving things; I'm probably not the only one. But if I go too far aft, the trailer tips. I'm thinking of embedding a trailer ball in a 100 lb. section of log to use as a stabilizer. It's cheap, and by tipping it on its side, I can easily roll it out of the way. Has anyone come up with a better (cheaper, snazzier, etc.) solution?

Cinder block

I just stick a cinder block under the back rail of the trailer.

Jack??

Why not just use a jack aft of the trailer wheels? Not too snazzy but it will work or if you don't have a jack a log cut to size in the same location will work.

how about this

What about a small jackstand or two that you put under the trailer at the rear? Light enough to pick up and easy to store it out of the way when not in use, and it won't kill the grass.

Boat stands

I actually use a pair of boat stands under the stern. They came with my 20' boat, but won't be sold with it as they're so useful for this purpose. Learned quickly to support the back of the boat when my 200lb+ friend climbed in over the stern when we picked up the boat last October.

Cheap trailer fix

I have a 25 foot O'day on a trailer and to prevent the problem you describe, I put an auto jack stand under each rear corner of the trailer. Then with the trailer jack I raise the tounge up far enough to put just a little weight on the jack stands. Works perfect -- very solid.

even cheaper

When I am taking the trailer off my Jepp, I put a 2x4 board under the back of the trailer under the keel and then disconnect the trailer as usual. The trailer rests on the board if you jack it up high enough. No tipping.

2nd vote on cinder block

cinder block/log whatever is laying around that is slighter smaller than the space between the rear trailer crossbar and the ground. Weight on the rear rocks trailer down only to the point it hits the obstruction. Big see saw we have to play with.

Good ideas

I think I like the jackstand idea the best. Very portable, and lawn-friendly. I tried the log thing last night, since nobody had answered immediately, and I wanted to try it. It works, and is probably a great theft deterent (used with a hitch lock; you just can't walk away with this at all). But it will kill grass, and it's heavy to move around. Thanks all.
