Trailer for Catalina 27

I am about to take ownership of a Catalina 27 and I need to trailer it to my destination.

I am completely new to the game of moving boats around so obviously I started by searching online, I couldn't seem to find a lot of information regarding specific trailers.

Can anybody help me out with trailer options or advice?

Where are you moving it from? What kind of keel do you have?

I agree with tommays. I just paid 5,000.00 for a new trailer that will hold a 3200lb displacement boat. I have a pickup that will tow it and in my case, the savings on haulout, winter storage, mast storage and cradle storage will pay for the trailer in under two years. I am going to assume the a Cal 27 displaces about 6000lbs. This calls for a much stronger trailer and a much stronger tow vehicle. I once had an 8000lb displacement boat shipped 200 miles for about $1000,00. I suspect that loading and offloading formed a large part of the cost.

my story

OK,

So i'll give you guys the full run-down of what I am actually doing. I am creating an art project, which is essentially a mobile studio in the form of a sailboat on a trailer that is gonna be painted and styled to suit our event.

I have found and confirmed a 27ft Catalina, so now I need to relocate it from San Diego to Orange County. The boat currently does not have a motor, so sailing it up is just not gonna happen.

I am far from an expert on boats so I am trying to learn everything I can, as fast as possible

- I understand that I will for sure need a dual axle trailer, and a 3/4ton truck to tow it?

- I think the boat weighs 6,750lbs?

- I think the style of the trailer is referred to as a fixed keel trailer?
​

- The location that I am getting the boat from will lift it out for me onto a trailer but I have not seen it out of the water so I dont know exactly what the keel is like. Did the C27 come with more than one type? Fin keel or swing? What are the differences here?

Depending on how handy you are, you could make the trailer from an existing an relatively low cost car hauler. Start by sneaking into a marina that just happens to have the same boat on a trailer. It's early enough in the season so you'll probably find one. Measure the setup like crazy and fill your sketch pad with all sorts of information and notions. Find the car hauler and strip the deck off. Extend the tounge, weld on screw jacks to the frame.

This is basicaly what I did. I found a dually boat trailer but all the rest applied.

i am not sure of the site but the catalina 30 site has a diagram of a fixed stand that you could maybe find one for the 27 as well and use it on a low slung flatbed trailer of the proper weight capacity ...it is a factory diagram

Not to throw a damper on your purchase, but if you plan to moving the boat about on a trailer have you checked the laws pertaining to trailer and trailer load width. I believe the Cat 27 has a beam of 8'-10" (106 inches) and I also believe that in Calif. if you want to tow without a permit the trailer at the tires can be 106 inches, but the load (boat) can't be wider than 102 inches.

I guess I'm wondering why you didn't maybe pick a little smaller boat for doing this if you don't plan on sailing it or do you? You could get something about the same length that would be way less weight and would be 96 to 98 inches in width. Also once a boat is over 26 feet it can put you in special insurance for it (not your homeowners) and maybe some other things that would be not worth messing with. Of course if this is a commercial venture then the homeowners insurance is probably out anyway.

Sumner: I appreciate your advice. Honestly I had not considered those facts. But being even more honest, I am not really too concerned with operating within the laws, but it is very good to know where I'm at.

I have put some consideration into maybe making/modding a trailer, but for now I'm gonna go to bed and just hope I wake up to find my dual axle 30 ft trailer on my doorstep

Honestly, give a catalina dealer in san diego a call... see if he can hook you up with a transporter going through OC after delivering a boat to san diego.
