I am thinking about moving my boat about 200 miles. Away from the lake and back in a few months. She needs a lot of work that I don't want to pay the high price marinas to do if I can do it myself. I just need a trailer. Does anyone near the dallas, TX area have a trailer that they would like to loan, rent, or sale. If so my email is riversloth@yahoo.com

Thanks
Lynn

You might have better luck looking for a crappy boat (craigs list) already sitting on a decent trailer. My observation is that the price of a decent used trailer is usually high unless a crappy boat is sitting on it.

Buy the combo and offer to deliver the crappy boat to someone looking for a project. I've done this and ended up with a very nice dual axle trailer for $400 all in and a grandpa got a nice project to work on with his grandson.

RS You have a 37 foot sailboat w/ 13 foot beam. A sufficient trailer is going to cost you thousands of dollars, and the total load will be about 20,000 lbs, not exactly pickup truck territory. Permits will be required and it's likely to be over-height or very close.

I would guess that the cost for a trucker with the special trailer to move it 200 miles both ways would be less than the cost of buying an adequate trailer for a 37 foot boat, let alone if you have to buy or upgrade a tow vehicle.

Yes I'm aware of the costs weights and heights. A custom trailer brand new is quoted at 12k. Boats weight is 15k confirmed by crane. Boat and trailer together should be 17k. Which is honestly at the max of my truck ( bumper pull) . The weight my truck can pull is confirmed by ram taking into account the truck, engine, transmission and hitch rating. I'm also aware that I would need to hire a pilot car due to the width.
Sorry if i sounded rude. Just wanted to let it be known I've thought this through.

I have already paid to have the boat moved once. But it was only 80 miles and cost 2300. I've had another quote to do this move, 9k one way. Also with a trailer for that boat, I have the option to possibly float the boat on and off eliminating lift fees.

Over 12 feet requires permits for a super load requiring special permit which are expensive as well as escorts in addition to insurance in some areas. Further, I do believe with the weight of boat, trailer and tow vehicle you will be over 26000 pounds requiring a CDL permit.

Modification of any trailer require special knowledge how to construct a trailer to haul a 37 foot sailboat.

With that yo may be over 13 1/2 feet requiring over height permits plus you have to be extra careful if you do not have the experience.

Cost of a boat trailer will be expensive plus cost of stands. You need firm surface to support the boat and in some areas ordinances may not allow this.

All said find a boat hauler who owns a hydraulic trailer and has the experience unless you can find a do it yourself yard.

I am a retired Hunter dealer who transported boats

Wow! So you could buy a new trailer for less than the two directions hauling fee! In that case, unless you are lucky enough to find something that fits that 37 foot boat, I guess I'd investigate if the market for like-new used trailers is decent, and maybe buy one and then sell it. I can't imagine what it looks like to be able to float (on a launch ramp I suppose) a 37 foot keel boat on and off a trailer, avoiding the lift. I struggle with water depth on my 23 at times.

Crazy Dave. I understand everything you are saying. I have a class a cdl with some experiance. I've contacted texas, oklahoma, and arkansas permit authorities to verify that I could do this. Yes I'd have to have permits and 1 lead car, to make the move. Cost to hire a lead car is one thing I haven't checked yet. The width I believe is the main problem. If I get a trailer that was special built then it should be low enough. If you convert a regular trailer then I think height would be an issue.
Isaksp, it is possible to float a 37 of course the ramp has to be deep enough. There is a YouTube video where they are floating a h37 at lake Stockton Missouri. Probably not easy but possible. My boat only has a 5 foot draft.
There are a lot of variables but I'm hopeful it can happen.
If I took the floating idea out. The custom build I first talked about could be made as a gooseneck for an additional 3k. Which my truck would pull much more easily and be under max for my truck.
I don't want to buy the new trailer. I was hoping to find a used one.
All this is just to try and save money. The boat needs a lot of work and there's not a place on the lake that will allow me to do the work.

The Hunter dealer at Stockton Mo was a trailer mfg as well whom I bought trailers from. That probably came from them. All said my recommendation is to hire someone. It took years of learning experience retrieving sailboats and of course training by experts

Catalina 270 255 Wabamun. Welcome to the marina
Wow, and I thought I was a little off hauling around the 270 at 11,500. That's just flat out too big, and unless you've got a 550 or 650 truck, it's too much. The book, and the glossy ads on the telly may suggest you can haul around half a zillion lbs, but it's simply not the case.

Mast is already down. From previous move. I was trying to figure this out before I put it back up.
Well it sounds like I'm going to be having the marina do all the work. Thanks for everyone's responses

Have you looked at a professional boat hauler with a hydraulic trailer for a quote as that would be the cheapest way if doing the work yourself

I've gotten quotes but most are very high and I'm not sure what kind of trailer they have. When moving it the first time I used the only local company I could find and they did not have a hydraulic trailer. Other companies have the dead leg charges that rack up the price.

Where is the boat at.
Tritons yachts out of Oriental, NC has such a trailer which is hydraulic plus the experience which he goes all over the east coast. He might throw in rental of stands as long he has that retune trip. 252/249-2001. Paul Wells. He has hauled with hydraulic trailers he has owned for nearly 40 years to include commissioning of sailboats as he is a Catalina dealer. Not a good time to call as he is dealing with a hurricane

Probably too far out but call Paul as he may someone in that area. Suggest cauling a sailboat dealer to see if they know a good one. I would wait a few days to call Paul. He is probably under water now and now tornado warnings which is a first.
