After recovering the boat with the (Hunter) trailer extended, it is very difficult to retract the tongue to the towing position (with the trailer on its 3rd wheel). Any suggestions?
I just chuck the wheels and push with the tow vehicle (if the boat weight doesn't unextend the trailer by itself when I'm running it up to my drydock spot -which is quite frightening if you don't see it happening in the mirror!)
With the boat on the trailer there is some flexing which causes a change in alignment of the extension. I have found it helpful to crank the 'third wheel' up or down until I discover the correct position.Of course, there are those times when I have to have someone push on the extension as I apply a swift kick to it just as it enters the end tube.
in the full back position the end rests on a small lip. That's usually the problem. The tongue won't slide up over that small support lip and you therefore can't get it back that last 3" to pin the tongue. I welded a small sloped ramp at the front of this ledge so the tongue would slide up and into this resting bracket. Works excellent now.If it binds and just won't slide back you might find it easier to unhook from the truck and slide the tongue back by hand while someone else lightly lifts the back end of the tongue up into this bracket. If the trailer jack wheel is down this only makes the binding problem worse unless you are lucky enough to have the wheel exactly at the no-load heigth when backing the tongue up.RayS/V Speedy.
