I have a Catalina 27 on Lake Michigan and lots (3) on Marco Island. Would you be interested in swapping some boat use time? rm_fleming@hotmail.com It may save you some trailering.

Trailerable!!

We've just returned from six weeks of sailing the BC coast. This meant trailering our 80 C27 approx 1200 miles each way, including over the rocky mountains . Our trailer was built by a local welding company to my design. Basic construction is of, approx 2"x4" steel tube (thick walled) supported by two 8000 lb axles complete with electric brakes, a 10" deep trough runs down the centre to hold the keel. The measuring for the pads was done on another boat that was on the hard. If you have access to a good welding shop they will help you design a simple but sturdy trailer. Note: our boat and trailer weighed in at just over 9000 lbs.we towed it with a Ford F250 with 460 cu in engine, 5 spd trans, and a 410 rear end, despite this we were down to second gear on some of the steeper hills. I recommend carefull consideration as to your tow vehicle. If you are still having trouble with trailer design, get back to me and I'll try to send you some photo's and measurements of ours.

Yes! Trailer her anywhere...

I have trailered a Full keel Cat 25 for many years. We took her to the coast each winter. I now trailer a Cat 30. I built the trailer and have had no problems. I use an "A" frame to step the big stick! I have to get permits to pull her. But you shouldn't. Make sure you have a good tow vehicle. I like electric brakes on the trailer. The other had surge brakes. They rusted! And I can control the braking better from the cab. We pull our CAT 30 with a F350 Powerstroke. It has all the power you need and we get 10 MPG pulling the boat. GO FOR IT!

How do you load it?

For those of you who trailer your sailboat, how do you load it? I just bought a Catalina 27 and trailer. Since the boat was already in the water, I didn't need to launch her. Come winter, I would like to haul her out but the yard wants $170 to lift her out of the water and set her on the trailer plus another $75 to unstep the mast. There has got to be a cheaper (and easier way).

Too wide to be legal

May get away with it anyway. I think it is less than 2 inch too wide....

c27 trailering

I have trailered my c27 over a thousand miles (buffalo ny to Kansas) I pull my trailer with a heavy half ton GMC that has a camper special package and an additional load booster.A 350 cu in. motor is a little small but can get down the road . I would recommend minimum of 250 to 300 hp engind. Problems 1--are Gross vehicle wt is 15-16,000 pound-- Probably should have at least a one- ton( F-350 or C-30) to keep the lawyers and the law happy, 2-- legal width is 8feet 6 inches and the boat is 8ft 10 inches It is very difficult to measure beam of a boat easily and I doubt the cops could notice the 2 inch overwidth 3. I use a EZ loader rated for 8000 pounds that weighs 3600 pouds empty! the boat weighs close to 7000 pounds with no gear. I have a tandem axle set up and the tire load is close to the limit. Consider a tri axle if hauling in the hot country in the summer. 4.--my overhead height is 13 feet on my trailer One should be aware of underpass heights--no problems on interstates.
