A fellow sailor drowned here on Sunday while participating in a regatta. The weather kicked up a bit, 18 - 25 knots with rain and 3 -4 ft. waves. He somehow fell off the boat while wearing an inflatable, aound the waist pfd, which either never inflated or he wasn't able to inflate. Only in the water for 5-7 minutes. Story on the related link. Check your inflation devices everytime you put one on. Also, due to the tragedy of today, almost the entire city of Chicago is shut down. Sort of brings things into perspective. Fly your American flag big and proud this weekend. What that represents is what allows us to indulge ourselves in our favorite past time of sailing. "With Liberty and Justice For All." Appreciate the freedoms (sailing) vets give....
We take freedom for granted. Sailing, enjoying a lot of pastimes, is only possible because of the liberties and freedoms we enjoy. People have paid for these with their lives.

As a paramedic, I was narrating to my wife the way most of us would have handled it. I told her it's important to set up treatment and triage areas, where the injured could be treated. About that time, the South Tower collapsed into the area where the triage area would have been. I'm afraid to find out how many of my fellow medics became the people they were trying so hard to save... I'm gonna have a long talk with the "Man Upstairs", later...

Don I pray that this is over and that it doesn't touch your Canada or you. Today is a serious wake-up and we now know that we can never be sure. It scares me that we could live in a country as rocked as Israel or Palistine. In the USA, our freedoms are based on the consideration that other extend. We have freedom to play our radio as loud as we like but if it takes away someonelses freedom of quiet, freedom does not exist.It is a great shame that our freedoms have been taken today. It has shown us how easy it is to be attacked. I know this will not go unchallenged. I also know this will probably not be the last of this aggression toward the USA. sincerely, r.w.landau

Many years ago Capstick wrote about hunting lions in Africa. In his writings he wrote of what a dangerous beast the lion was, but he said that was nothing compared to how dangerous a wounded lion could be. I fear after yesterday we are the wounded lion. The American people have many friends around the world that watched yesterday’s events in horror. I’m sure the thought of “There but for the grace of god go I” was pretty common around the free world. I makes our disagreements we as Americans have with each other seem extremely petty. Politics, racism, religious and sexual intolerance and discrimination all seem pretty foolish now. We as Americans, especially American men are pretty uptight about telling friends and family we love them. I guess the biggest lesson we can take from this is never let the words go unsaid!
