sea room

can't tell what i would do, probably the same thing. But, there is no substitute for sea room. They might still be alive if they headed out to sea.

We can play armchair quarterback and second guess all day long but when Mother Nature rears up, humans had better take heed, lest there be a loss of life. Having been through more hurricanes than I care to remember, my Dad always took the boat out and into sound, deep, open water. He always felt if the flotsam and other boats don't get you, the terra firms will. So we always headed out into the storm. Right or wrong, thats what we did, and we survived better than most in the marina did. I've rode out many storms sitting on the bow with waves crashing over my head. Being young and dumb. Dad was constantly yelling at me to hold on or get inside , I really could only see he was yelling something. I think he liked the balast. Bilge pumps running and hatches and portals closed tight, everything secured below, we made it through everyone of them. I've saw a guy lose his hand reaching between boats while tieing them up together reaching for a fender. The boats slamming together. Lesson learned there. My first experience with a tourniquet at 14.
With no anchor and no power, one is at the mercy of Mother Nature. She has no conscience. What happened here is a lesson to be learned and learn I intend to do, every-time I hear stories, even this sad one. And sad it is for sure.

Keep it up,

Kinda odd

The boat appears to be of metal construction and to not have faired badly except for demasting. wonder how the two men where lost.

It has been over 20 years since I went thru the Beagle Chan on a sub, the entire transit was done on the surface. It was one of the roughest transits we ever made. The waters are very cold, we had ice forming in the bilge during the passage. I would guess that when they went into the water they had bare minutes due to the cold water. Very sad, a beautiful area, but very fickle weather.

If you've never been to Ushaia it is one of the most desolate places on earth and the Southern most city in the world. The weather can be hellish....

I wonder the same thing as Bill. the boat looks like it made it through reasonably well. Did they make the mistake of abandoning ship before they should have?

The sailors managed to enter Sloggett Bay and drop anchor near the Argentine shore, but at some point the mast broke and their line snapped, tossing the yacht's captain Marek Radwanski and his brother Pawel to their deaths in the frigid water as the boat smashed against rocks, Ribeiro said.

The article also says that the rest of the crew (5) ended up on shore. The question I have is how they got in the water. Were they thrown, or did they abandon ship?
