Bought Oday 25 with trailer. To my knowledge Boat weighs 4,000#, and guess trailer at 1,000.

Ford Expedition has 8,000# towing capacity.

Anyone towed similar with 1/2 ton, F150 etc ?

Work ok?

Thanks, Jack

Probably depends on where you are towing it to. I only have to tow mine from storage in spring and back to storage in the fall. I have a 222 and use a nissan frontier V6 to tow it. I think the bigger issue is the brakes not so much the power to tow. Make sure your brakes are up to the task. And take it very slow because it will require longer distances than normal to stop.

Personally I see no issue towing that boat with an Expedition. Hell I'd tow a 30footer if I needed to.

Make sure all your fluids are in good shape. Replace and/or top off as needed. Don't forget differential/transfer case oil. The Expedition is a big vehicle, if you're rated at 8000# I see no problem if its in good shape.

I tow my 22 (~3000#) with a Ford Explorer Sport Trac - no problem.

Oday 25 N/A
I bought my O'day 25 last fall from an owner in Menominee Michigan. I towed the boat all the way back to Metro-Detroit with my F-150. My F-150 has the 5.4l V8 and the 8000 lb towing package. Also, the brake system on the boat did not work. I had no problem with the hilly terrain in northern Michigan and the truck pulled the boat like a dream.

As far as the breaking goes. I did between 60 and 65 on I-75 and kept plenty of room between me and the cars in front of me. I had no problems with the trailer slowing down on the freeway. I did have to do a substantial amount of city driving, stop and go, and the truck stopped the boat without any problems but I did drive extremely cautiously. I did plan the trip on a Sunday, so it would give me less traffic.

The previous owner towed the boat from Greenbay WI to Menominee with an Avalanche and had no problems without trailer breaks. I am going to put breaks on the trailer this summer, but did not have the option when I picked up the boat.

Make sure you check the trailer tires for dry rot. I had a blow out on I-75 and it sucked. Luckily I had a spare tire I purchased. Don't half ass it like I did and just replace any tire if it looks rotted.

Thanks to all.
JD especially yours. Same type truck and boat and not sure if trailer brakes are working on mine either. Trip all flat, mostly country roads, plenty of time and like you will avoid the few miles of mild traffic until Sat morning.

Be well to all!

sounds like the truck will do the job. Fords have better brakes the Chev trucks and a 1/2 ton Ford will be ok. I never travel without trailer brakes a spare tire, jack, 4way lug wrench, and an extra set of bearings. Over the years I have seen too many "on the side " trailers because the owner was not prepaired. If I was replacing or adding brakes I would do electric brakes, they work different and better then surge. If you have a surge brake hitch head on the trailer then find out how you lock the head so if you back UP a hill the trailer brakes do not actuate. My Oday 26 trailer is 1408# and the tires I replaced and upsized one more weight range also more tires blow from under inflation then overinflation. Have fun!!!....oops...I almost forgot... put on a mast step plate (for turning blocks) and remove the boom vang claw at the bottom of the mast...if you lower the mast to the stern that claw will poke a hole in your cabin roof ( from experence)

Remember while towing the boat to make sure she's strapped down really well to the trailer. Tie a rope or chain with a turnbuckle from the winch stand to the bow eye and a line or strap from the primary winch down to the trailer frame.

Hi All, thought I'd chime in on this thread seeing I just purchased a 76' Oday 25 on a trailer. I pulled it home last Friday evening, about 95 miles with my 2005 Toyota Tacoma without any problems. I wouldn't want to pull it to Florida from Northern Michigan with this truck but a few times from Luther to Manistee will be fine. Having electric trailer brakes make stopping a whole lot easier! Now on the getting her cleaned up and ready to sail!
