Hello all. My wife and I just purchased a 1985 H22. We need to pick it up in a week or so and tow it to our lake, maybe 80 miles, where it will be moored until fall. The boat is on a tandem axle Tilt-Magic? trailer. I have an Isuzu Trooper with a manual transmission. Is anyone else towing an H22 with a similar truck? Thanks in advance, Tim

check your owner's manual

Check your manual for the towing specs of your rig. Is the boat fixed or swing keel? If it's a swing keel, it weighs 3200 pounds plus trailer.

Tim, here's a good link that shows towing capacities for most vehicles. Brian

Don't worry

I have a 23 hunter. The weight itself is 2500# which it should be higher than your 22 weight. Don't worry about the isuzu....will haul it. I think the major problem is the braking, but in express way they don't get heated as do in the city. Of course you are going to expend a little more gas due to the weight, but I considered as minimum compare to the city driving.

22 weighs more than 23

The H22 weights 800 pounds more than the H23 because of the amount of ballast in it.

Manual transmission is the weak link.

Your SUV will probably get your new boat to the lake and launch it without to much trouble as long as there aren't to many stop & goes, but pulling it back out of the water is going to be very hard on that clutch. Automatics are much better suited to ramp launching and retrieving.

Okay for a little while

If you don't do much towing it will be okay. My H22 killed the transmission in my 1998 Ford F150 (4.6 liter engine). I moved up to a Ford F350 Diesel for towing my H22. After I bought the truck I then decided to keep it in a slip. I still use the trailer to haul the boat and other things (it is very nice to have a trailer).

Be careful launching

I have an older model Jeep Cherokee 4WD/Auto that I towed my H-22 with. Backing can be a real adventure (even dangerous) if you are launching on a steep incline. It is a lot of weight behing my realatively light vehicle. Even towing on the back roads of Texas makes me wish I had something heavier to tow with. Consequently, I hardly ever go faster than 45 mph. Just my opinion!

Thanks for all the replies. I've got a buddy with a full size pickup who'll retrieve it for me. After that it's just pulling it out of the water once or twice per year and moving it 100 yards to the drysail area. Thank God for low-transfer when pulling it out of the water, aye? I won't be ruining a clutch in low-transfer. Tim
