Does anyone have any experience towing a Catalina 22 with an Chevy S10 Pickup. The truck has a V6 engine and automatic transmission. I am considering buying a C22 and need to know the answer before I do. Thanks

tow

hello mark, I have a 1979 ½ ton chev. Pick up with a 350 eng. And auto trans. tows my 22 with no problem. I just bought a new to me 1993 jeep chrokee, with a 243 cubic inch (4 liter) six. The book tells me that, with an automatic trans, it should be able to drag 5000 lb plus. This jeep is about the same size as the truck you are looking at. The 22 with trailer is around 3000 lb.call the truck dealer and ask them what it can pull. john

S10 Tow

Mark, I tow with a '93 S10 2 wheel drive 4.3L. My C22 is on a Load Rite single axel trailer with 10" surge brakes. All loaded up with the outboard and other gear, I figure I'm at around 3500#'s. Two things to consider. 1) I don't tow very far, about 15 miles, once in and once out. 2) the ramp I use is fairly new and in great shape. The truck does tow without any problems and I wouldn't be afraid to go longer distances ( I'd add a trany cooler for really long distance) The same truck only with 4 wheel drive will be my next vehicle, but this one's in great shape so it 'll be a while. Good Luck

Tow Hitch

Mark, One thing I forgot to mention is that I have a Class III frame hitch. I wouldn't attemp to tow anything with the bumper. Good Luck again.

Explorer

Mark, I've towed my C-22 with a '94 Ford Explorer (4.0 V6) from Calif. to Wash without any problem. Had to stay in 4th gear though because I'd have to go a lot faster than safe in 5th in order to keep the engine from lugging. Just be sure you have a good hitch, and transmission cooler.

GMC S15

I have an '86 C22 with a single axle Trailrite trailer that I tow behind a 1984 GMC S15 extended cab 4X4 with a 2.8L V-6 and 5-speed manual. To be honest it's more than I should tow with this small an engine. It's O.K. between home and the ramp because I don't have far to go nor any long hills. The trailer, with a spare tire hanging on it, weighs the better part of 1,000 lbs. I weighed everything once when I trailered it to Port Albernie, Vancouver Isl., British Columbia, Canada. The boat by itself, loaded down with two and a half weeks of provisions, hit 3,200 lbs. so the boat and trailer was about 4,200 lbs. Way more than should be attempted with a 2.8L V-6! That's with a Class 3(?) hitch, of course. I drove semi for several years and I didn't feel real comfortable with it. With a 4.3L S10 for local towing you would want to drive conservatively and keep your foot "out of the pump" when pulling hills so you don't build too much heat in the engine. Otherwise I wouldn't think you would have a problem, as long as you drive sensibly.
