I am interested in purchasing a Hunter 26 however before making a purchase I'd like to be sure my 2001 Yukon can pull it. Does anyone have any experience pulling the 26 Water ballast with a GMC Yukon or similiar vehicle?

Towing Hunter 26

Lots on this subject in the archives. My H260 weighs 5400 lbs on the trailer with a tongue weight of 600 lbs. My guess is the H26 is in the same ballpark and you'll probably be OK, but it depends on a number of variables. For example: What is the weight of your vehicle? What is the weight of the boat/trailer combination? What is the tongue weight? What is the Gross Motor Vehicle Weight(GMVW) rating of your vehicle? If you don't know, run your vehicle and boat/trailer over a certified scale and you'll have the answer to your question. Check your owners manual for the GMVW. Take the time to get all four weights; the safety of you and your family depends on knowing this information. Make verifying this information as part of the deal.

I towed a H240 with a 98 2d Tahoe. I dont think you will have any trouble. I would spring for a transmission cooler if you are doing frequent towing or tow in hillly areas.

That' why they build them

I remember the olden days when people only bought big vehicles for towing. The Yukon should do great with the H26. I imagine it comes standard with at least the 5.3 liter gas motor. My 2002 Silverado pickup has the light duty tow package and does great. Mines 2wd and I have the H240 which is smaller but I rarely spin the wheels (usually when the ramp is REALLY wet) on launch ramps but have always been able to get it out of the water. Before I bought this truck I pulled the 240 with a 3.0 liter v-6 Ford Ranger. I put heavy duty shocks on the rear end of the ranger and it did OK. It was actually better going up ramps than the Chevy Silverado. Less HP and Torque to break the tires loose from the pavement.

We tow our 260 with a Yukon XL

As a matter of fact, when I bought it in NY I towed it back to Ohio the same day. The XL is a bit bigger than a standard Yukon. We've got the base 5.3L engine that they made in the 2000 models. The only thing I've found is that 65 MPH is about the max speed we like to go with the boat on our dual-axle trailer. We have acceptable braking distance at that speed, and I don't feel comfortable much higher than that. Hope that helps!

Jeep Liberty

I towed my H26 over 3,000 miles with my Jeep Liberty. I towed it from Florida to Michigan when I bought it. That had a 3.7 liter V6 and a 5,000 lb tow rating. It had plenty of power. The only issue I had with that vehicle was sway. On good roads it did OK up to about 70. On uneven roads I had to slow down considerably to prevent sway. On really bad roads I sometimes had to slow to 45 or 50. I usually towed at about 65. I just traded the Jeep in a few days ago for a Dodge Ram 1500 Quad cab 4x4 with a 5 speed automatic and a 340hp Hemi. I haven't towed the boat with it yet but it is rated for far more than the H26 weighs.

Thanks to all!

Thanks to everyone for their input on towing; I expect now to move forward in my search for the 26 and not be concerned about the towing aspect. Wayne
