Looking at a 27hp model -- however, not sure if there are any advantages/disadvantages between these two manufacturers. My option is one of these two manufacturers -- no other brands... Any thoughts? Thx -Chuck

Westerbeke vs Yanmar

Since Westerbeke now owns Universal, I would consider them. I have a Universal, so I am biased. Built in fuel bleeding system and glow plugs for quick and easy starting would make me buy another one.

Depends on what's in there now!

Since the late 80's, the standard diesel engine in Catalina 30s was the Universal M25XP. I had one of these excellent engines in my 1987 model. It provided enough power to get my boat up to hull speed with some left over for head winds and waves (even with a folding two bladed prop). I was very happy with it until I sold the boat and bought a C-320. However, if your boat is currently equipped with an Atomic 4, the M25XP will require modifications to the engine bed to allow it to fit in the compartment and to line up with the prop shaft. There are at least two models of diesels that are advertised as direct drop-in replacements for the A-30. I believe that one of them is a Yanmar. From what I have read about diesel engines, nearly any modern marine diesel is very reliable and will give years of service (as long as it's not abused too badly). From this, I would probably purchase and install one of the "direct replacement" models. Yanmar engines have a reputation for being noisy. Based on my limited experience with my C-320 with the Yanmar 3GM30, I can affirm this reputation.

Universal M320B

This is probably the engine that will fit best in an older C-30 without MAJOR modifications. I went through the same ordeal on my C-30 and found the best replacement for the A-4 was the M320B. Both the Yanmar and the Westerbeke were going to require some serious work to make them fit. I also have a friend who used to own a chain of rental shops and he swears that the Kubota engines will run and out last either the Mitsubishi (Westerbeke) or the Yanmars. It got to the point with him that he would only buy equipment (Bobcats etc.) that had Kubota engines! Universal engines are Kubotas!!!! My freind used to put in the tens of thousands of small diesel hours per year on engines so I have to beleive what I hear considering I only put 50 or so on.... -Rodd C.
