I am replacing the centerboard pendant. I got a new one from D&R but it is hanging on the clevis pin when the board is up. I don't think its catching on the shackle but it may be? Any one else have any problem with the shackle or clevis pin from D&R catching in the keel? How should I attach this if I don't use the shackle? Any Ideas? Thanks Keith

Kieth, I did have a problem.
The old cable connections were connected right to the long "U" shaped stainless that is connected to the centerboard. If you add a shackle to that, it can jamb in the entrance to the centerboard tube. It could be as simple as turning the shackle over so the extended pin head is facing up. Use the smallest shackle that will connect to the stainless "U"that connects to the CB. r.w.landau

I tie the pendant directly to the centerboard. I use 1/4 in. line. No fuss no muss.

I am about to replace mine tomorrow. I plan on threading the wire thru a hole in the trailing edge of the board and swaging a crimp at the end inside the 1" hole. I will try and take a pic tomorrow.

Joe, Yes that looks alot like the Shackle that Rudy sent me. I don't think the shackle it self is what is getting caught. The clevis pin sticks out about a 1/4 inch or so that I think is causing the problem? But the board is getting caught before it even gets all the way up so it may still get caught on the shackle even if the pin was shortened? r.w., I have heard of others being as you describe but mine was different. There is about a inch hole that goes all the way through the side of the board at the top of the board .The pendant cable went through a hole on the edge of the centerboard and was crimped inside of the one inch hole. There was no shackle. I put the shackle that Rudy sent through the inch hole and connected the pendant but there seems to be no way its going to work. I am thinking now that my best bet would be either to do as Teepee said and us a 1/4 inch line or use some of the old cable from the old pendant and crimp a loop and attach then new pendant in the loop? I'm going to attempt to eliminate pendant when I
fashion new centerboard for O'Day 23. I will put a one inch open brass tube in center board where shackle pin was. Then drill 1/4 inch hole in from trailing edge of board. High quality line will lead in through trailing edge, secured with a big knot inside open tube cross section. There will be nothing protruding from either side of board.

Keith, The hole in my board is just large enough for the shackle pin. See if you can get a shorter pin for your shackle. I may have had to do that. I just don't remember. If the hole in your centerboard is too big for your pendant line shackle pin, I would reconstruct the hole with epoxy and re drill it to a smaller diameter hole. I had to reconstruct my centerboard wedges just this afternoon with a 101 West Systems Handy Repair Pack that I had bought in 2001. The stuff is still good too. It set up as hard as a rock in two hours and I was able to reshape the wedges with my dremel tool with the small drum sander. See if you can look up inside the slot with a flash light. Maybe the pipe is protruding too far into the slot from inside the cabin. I know that we have different boats, but I'll take a peek in mine tomorrow if it doesn't rain, and I'll let you know what I see up in the slot. I just received my bottom paint in the mail today so I plan on painting my centerboard and the inside slot as soon as possible. I'm almost certain that I made the braid splice on my pendant line a couple of years ago. They don't use wire cable on the O'Day 25s and 26s anymore. My pendant line looks like 5/16" braid. That's all you need, plus the shackle. The pin on my shackle is just long enough to get the cotter pin inserted when I attach it to the centerboard. Joe

Greetings, Just a little more information that I learned this morning after reading these postings. I also purchased a new pendant from D&R last winter, and after taking a quick look at it decided that it would fit with no problem. Well, after reading what you guys have been saying, I went out and measured the width of the old clevis vs the new clevis (the clevis not the pin) and discovered that the new one was almost 1/2" wider than my old clevis. I think that I will purchase some new cable and attach it like the old on was using a thimble and swedges. I will use the old clevis and get a new pin as it is very corroded. I don't think that I will argue with success as the old system did last since 1979. Thanks for all of your input, I am sure that this saved us all a lot of grief. George

The local rigging shop
was able to supply me with an old wire to line halyard that was still in good shape. Worked great and saved some $$. Just an option if your into the re-use philosphy

There's nothing wrong with that set up. It's probably even better than a shackle. It's a whole different set-up than what is on my centerboard, but pendant line on my tip-up rudder has a similar attachment. A picture is worth a thousand words, I guess.

OK, I had a "78" O'day 25 and the centerboard was not like that

In the course of my re-fit I have found it easier to try and duplicate what i pull off as opposed to to rigging something new. IMHO seems to work out better.

I hear you Buss. I had no idea that you had that type of set-up on your centerboard. That's a new one that I've never seen before. You probably thought that all the boards on these O'Days were like yours. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to write down all the dimensions of that pendant line so that you can duplicate it later and have one on hand just in case. I've never tried splicing wire to 3 strand rope, but I'm sure that I could do it with the proper directions. I do a lot of rope splicing and I've found that the 3 strand is a lot easier and faster to splice than the braid. Smooth Sailing! Joe

Bus thats just like mine
Mine is also a 76 and is exactly like Boat N' Bus posted. I got busy this weekend installing bilge pumps and never got back to the pendant line. I installed two Rule 800's and they fit great in the bilge.
