After a week anchored up, and basically loafing, in the Dry Tortugas, headed out towards Tampa Friday. That is one of the most peaceful and relaxing places I have ever been, and really hated to leave, but were running a little low on provisions, and time to at least start drifting back towards New Orleans. This trip the weather has been much kinder, and while we have gotten rained on a time or two, have not had any major blows, no big seas, and no lightning storms. Sat. night, after an excellent dinner, of very fresh Dorado filets, I had the 8 to midnight watch. Around 10 PM, before moonrise, I am sitting in the cockpit, kicked back, the auto pilot driving the boat. Seas are calm, and the sky is too beautiful to describe. The milky way is like a bright, broad racing stripe across the sky, and the stars are out by the bazillions, looking close enough to reach out and touch. The only other sign of life on earth is the occasional blinking of an aircraft strobe. I have a fresh cup of coffee, and my pipe going, and thinking that if I were to win the powerball tomorrow, I still can not think of any place I would rather be, or anything I would rather be doing. Have one more shot at this before I get back, so heres hoping that the hop from Tampa across the Fla. panhandle will be as good as this was.

Four years ago I made that same Tortuga trip on a friend's boat and pretty much had the same thoughts as you. Your post brought back memories, so I copied it and sent it to my friends Bill and Sue. Their boat? An Island Packet 38 named..."Nice 'N Easy" .

Great to hear it's going so well...

Man, Phil, you make it sound so good!! I'm embarrassed to admit this, but even though I live on Tampa Bay, I've never been there! My best sailing buddy described it differently than you (not much to do, no fresh water, etc), so he kinda talked me out of it. Now I feel stupid..obviously, what you're doing right now is what sailing is really about.

You guys definitely picked a great time to go. Aside from the heat, the weather's been ideal. Have a safe trip back...

Many Moons ago I hooked up with a bunch of Bird Watchers from the local Sierra Club in Miami. Not a Bird watcher my self, I took advantage of the Package they put together. Bus to Key West, Boat ride to Fort Jefferson and back again to Miami. This was usually done on a Three day weekend. We had a permit from the National Park to Camp on the Island itself for the long Weekend. Crystal clear Waters, no loom from the streetlights to block out the Stars and the Silence. No TV, radio or traffic noise. The lack of all that civilization noise is what struck me the most. I live in the Suburbs of Miami. Still at night, if I goout in my backyard by the Lake, I have that Orange Glow in the Sky, the roar of traffic fom I75 ove half a mile away, siren, jet noise, etc. It took me about 24 hours to unwind after arriving at Fort Jefferson, but the following two days of peace still remain with me.

Wow, Wow

Hey Phil, glad to hear some positive feedback on your trip. Even though the negative aspects about sailing/passagemaking are still appreciated. We armchair sailors need to know what its really like. Your post is well written and put a smile on my face and a "thats what Im talkin bout" in my head. Usually a pic or two would be appreciated-BUT- a pic would probably ruin my "mental pic". Thanks again Phil. Now I am juiced to go work on my "free boat". Patrick
