Catalina 27 Edmonds
Hi there,
We need to replace the outboard for our Catalina 27. Our 27 has the cutout in the transom, so our options are very limited for a replacement that would fit in the opening without having to increase the size of the cutout. We like the idea of the Torqeedo electric outboard, but other than the brochures, we have no frame of reference in regards to our Catalina 27.

Does anyone own or know someone who owns a Torqeedo electric outboard for their C27? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Zoey

Unless U have a battery bank the size of a Los Angeles class submarine I think you'll find that the average battery bank of group 24 deep cells will sputter out & go dead after 1 hour or less, if that's what's powering the "Torquedo." I have not heard that their built in battery supply lasts very long. But I believe that they were really designed to move a dingy or small keel boat,of which A C-27 is neither. Electric engines sound great but the best they'll do is motor U out of the marina. What do U do on the way back when the batteries go dead? Most of us like to rely on the back up "iron Jenny" to see ya home when the winds kick up, its raining & U can't see your hand in front of your face from bad weather. Nigel Calder did a study in SAIL this year on electric auxilliars & I don't believe that the Torquedo cut the mustard. If I had the choice I would go with an efficient 8 HP long shaft 4 stroke Honda outboard. Just my 2 cents worth.
