I'm rolling and tipping EasyPoxy on my topsides. I'm using a Wooster 3/16" nap foam roller for "ULTRA-SMOOTH SURFACES". Each pass leaves a gazillion bubbles that must be tipped down. Is this right? I primmed with Pettit Undercoater first, same type or roller. I gave me a mottled finish, like an orange peel. Should I dump these rollers and get another kind? I have one or two more coats to got so there's still time.

I used a weenie roller and the sooner it's tipped after roller application the better. It's really a two person job. I was tipping immediately behind, like one roller width at a time, right away. Direct sunlight is a negative factor too.

Here's the finish I was able to achieve. It's not spray gun quality but better than it was.

I used foam rollers. You have to tip immediately behind the roller, always keeping a wet edge. I think your paint is a one-part. I too used a one-part but Interlux Toplac.

Oh, and Neil is right. Paint only in the shade.

Thanks guys. I am tipping behind but right now it's around 60 degrees so that give me a little time. Shade . . . not so much. No shade in my yard. I live in what used to be a pasture. It'll take a few more decades before my maples are any help at all! I've learned that I have to roll on thinner coats over the next two. I might try reinforcing a foam brush too. And I just sent an email to Pettit. Maybe they can shed some light on the bubbles.

I had a million bubbles too but they tipped out easily and the finish flowed out pretty well.

Its the temperature. I have had this exact problem before. Tried to paint on a cold day and got orange peel finish. Sanded it down, got some advice from this forum and tried again on a warmer day. Got a great finish.

The surface of the boat has to be at least 65 but 70 is better. The tipping and shade are good advice also, but I'm quite sure you need to wait for a warmer day.

Roller covers

Corona: The Glasskoter® R101F (1/8” nap), and R201F (3/8” nap) are conventional mohair type roller covers. The Foam Slicker® F780–012F is a foam cover.
Redtree: The Deluxe Mohair® R–11PH (3/16” nap) is recommended for topside enamels and varnishes. The Foam Roller® (1/8” nap) is designed for all urethanes and epoxies. The Dynex® R–22PH (3/8” nap) is recommended for bottom paints, epoxies and resins.

A brush should be used for tipping off the paint to remove any bubbles or stipples left by even the shortest nap rollers. Use fresh T0002 and/or T0031 to clean or soak equipment.

Always keep extra equipment handy on the job.

And i second its still to cold

I help maintain a fleet of 50 Dyer Dow sailing dinghies at Mystic Seaport. We, also, use the EasyPoxy paint. As others have mentioned you need to roll and tip immediately and the bubbles will flatten out nicely as it dries. We use the same procedure when applying the undercoat. I find a light sanding of the undercoat helps before applying the EasyPoxy.
