I have a 1987 hunter 35',I need to replace the topping lift, and I was wondering if anybody has done this on this model. I would like to have the new one, in hand so to save trips up the mast. And how is it conneted on top of mast? how long? Thanks Ron

Get rid of it

I took mine off and replaced it with a boomkicker on my 92 - 35.5. It works very well and completely eliminates the need.

He cannot remove it!

Ron cannot remove his topping lift because of his Dutchman. We can climb up there with the ATN top climber and remove it. Then another trip to replace it. Just have the cold ones ready.

Not sure how yours is rigged,

...but on my 35.5 the topping lift came down inside the mast to make adjustments easy. If yours is rigged this way you can run a messenger while you make up an exact replacement. The alternative is as you said, to go aloft and remove it at the masthead.

Topping lifts and Dutchmans

Being new to my HL35 (1987), and have been reading about how to rig and tune the Dutchman system. The Dutchman people recommend using a topping lift system that can be lowered entirely. That means a topping lift that runs down the mast and exits. (in fact they have a few suggested ways to rig it to accomplish the same thing). The goal is to be able to remove your mainsail and take the entire set of Dutchman lines AND toppinglift with the sail. This saves having to disconnect the line and re-adjust it each year, etc. Their other suggestions are to have a continuous loop toppinglift that allows you to bring down the Dutchman system but still leave the boom supported (neat idea, but a little extra wind drag). I've probably not described it very well, but check out the Dutchman info on the web and you will get pictures too. I plan rig up a toppinglift that can be lowered when the sail is removed because I have found it time consuming to fine tune the Dutchman system and I don't want to have to do this every year.
