Topping Lift

I'm a novice rigging my V224 for the first time. It appears that the topping lift is just rope, and a fairly light line at that? Is that typical? I'm also confused about the outhaul for the mainsail. Do both the topping lift and the clew of the main attach to the same eye at the end of the boom?

topping lift and outhaul

Hi, Novelman here. On my 22' Venture with a 25' mast, I use a light nylon line (minimum 50#) for my topping lift. I installed a small cheek block at the end of my boom and run the outhaul thru it and back to a tie off along the boom toward the mast. In this way there need not be a connection at the end of the boom. Does this help? Novelman

I think I have it?

Yeah, I think I get it. I found a small pulley (cheek block?) in the bits and pieces. If I shackle the block to the eye on the top of the boom I can run my topping lift line through the block and tie it to the clew with a bowline. Does that sound correct? Thanks for the info!

That will do it. With mine I attached the cheek block to the boom with screws, but both ways will work. Novelman

Jam cleat

I rigged a topping lift on my 21 with a 3/16 line from the mount for the rear stay at the top of the mast, through a clip in a eyebolt at the end of the boom, and deadended at a jam cleat mounted on the line coming down. Lift the jam cleat to raise, spread the lines below it to lower. A second clip through the eye secures the boom to the backstay when not in use.
