Losing main halyard
Speaking of losing the main halyard - a couple of years ago I was invited on board a beer can racer in Long Beach, Ca. What they were looking for was some advise as to how they could polish their team work and improve their sail trim. Normally, in these cases, I NEVER, touch anything but as we were motoring out to the start area the deck guy was having trouble attaching the halyard to the mainsail. I decided to help - big mistake!! The shackle slips out of my hand and up the mast it goes. I don't know these guys at all but I can read their minds. As I'm watching the shackle swing in the breeze and wondering how I'm going to get it down I asked the skipper if he had a boat hook. He said yes. One wasn't going to do it so I then asked if he had 2 - he did. I taped them together and managed to snare the shackle on the second try. I really was happy to get off that boat. Lesson learned - now I NEVER, EVER, EVER touch anything on boats I go on.
