topping lift

I've got a 1982 DSII and I'd like to add a topping lift, any suggestions on how to rig this up? Is it better to use a fixed shackle on the top of the mast or a pulley to bring it down to a cleat at the bottom of the mast and/or how to rig an adjustable shackle/whatever at the end of the boom? Just cleared the ice off my driveway and thinking of better days to come.
