Topping Lift

Has anyone re-routed the topping lift? Mine is original i think. The topping lift is tied to the mast head passes through a small block on the starboard side of the boom then to a cheap little plastic cleat. I have considered putting a small metal cleat on the port side of the boom opposite the small block and attaching a small block to the topping lift then routing a line from the starboard side through the block hanging from the topping lift to the cleat on the port side. Sounds confusing when I write it out like this. I would like to know if anyone has done anything different. I have considered the solid vang or boom kicker but have other projects that need that kinda money.

H34 is different

My H34 uses a block on the topping lift wire and a 1/4" line from the boom through the block and back to a cleat on the boom. Last year I replaced the cheap metal cleat and used a Marlon cleat (3") with SS Machine screws instead of the self taping screws that were in the old cleat.

My old lift was lame.

On my H34 ('86) the factory system was so poor that we replaced it right from the get-go. The boat was new so that means that was 18 years ago. Don't ask me how is was rigged. I forgot. But the way we converted it was workable. At the end of the topping lift cable, (vinyl over wire) I swagged an eye with a thimble. Then installed a block. The length of cable was such that the block was about two feet above the boom when the mainsail was raised. The boom was connected to the block with a length of rope. It was dead-ended onto a pin at the top of the boom end-cap. From there the rope went to the block on the topping lift and back to a cam-cleat on the rear of the boom. To adjust the boom, just pull or letup on the rope. The extra line was stored in the boom end. Simple. Now we have a boom kicker. Simpler, love it.

Spare Halyard

Last year I installed a new main sail with a "Dutchman" system and ran a second halyard through the mast. My mast had two spare slots for additional halyards.

Mine is the same as the H-34

Jim Mine is the same as the H-34 except the cleat is to STB. Are you still in the same slip? Did you get the toerail fixed?

Yes and Yes

Yes I am in the same slip. The toe rail is complete and the compression post is replaced with a 3" 316 stainless steel post. It all came out very well. I did a lot of other upgrades also. I have been wondering about you if you made your trip ok etc. e-mail me offline jvandyke2@cox.net

Prefer the old ways

The old H33 topping lift was rigged as you suggested through the boom. Not liking the topping lift floating, whipping in the air, a simple line and hook now attaches the topping wire to the boom. After the main is raised the hook is removed from the boom end and reattached out of the way on the back stay. If the bimini is up the topping lift is moved to the mast and secured there. This is a little more work but it keeps the topping lift from blowing in the wind and hitting the main.
