I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 1984 O'DAY 222. WHEN NOT SAILING, THE BOOM IS ATTACHED TO THE REAR STAY FOR SUPPORT. UNDER SAIL THE BOOM IS SUPPORT BY THE SAIL. WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO ATTACH (EQUIPMENT AND LOCATION) A SEPARATE TOPPING LIFT?

I added a topping lift to my '74 O'22 a few years ago using a 1/4" line attached to the end of the boom, running through a block at the mast top and back to a cleat on the right side of the mast a couple of feet above the cabin top. It's kind of difficult to raise and lower the main single handed, particularly with a bimini, w/o the topping lift.

I added a topping lift to my 1984 Oday222. It was pretty easy. With the mast down drill a hole in the aluminum mast cap that will fit a clevis pin(1/8 to 1/4 inch). Secure a 3/8 line from that pin to the rear of the boom. How you attach it is up to you, we used a brass quick clip to attach to a loop at the rear of the boom. This boom is not adjustable, but adding a pulley to the clevis pin and leading the line down the front of the mast to a cleat will solve that. Cheers
