i currently have a topping lift in place from the top of the mast but noticed most of the other boats around me have a "back up" one from the their back stay with a wire lead. question is how is the wire attached to the backstay. a simple release clip from the boom is easy at that end but curious about the backstay attachment

Usually the wire is nicro-pressed to the backstay. My 25 does not have one. I personally do not like them as it torques the backstay if the mainsheet is too snug. You also cannot slide the boom to one side of the hatch when you are at anchor or on the dock. I have added a line adjustment blocks to the t-lift so it can easily be eased or tightened.

Usually that is done while the mast is unstepped with a nicopress. Like Chris I also am not fond of this setup. If your sailing in conditions that a backup is a neccesity then by all means, if not, then why? Good Luck

When moored
I had one secured a foot or two above boom that I used when the boat was moored. When attached the booms movement is limited so when you lean in it it stays more or less in place. Mine is secured w/ a U clamp w/ a snap hook for attaching to boom. I always figured it took some wear & tear off the rope topping lift.

Go Rigid!
We have done away with our topping lift. We just replaced our main sail, and did not like the way the wire topping lift flapped against the roach of the main. Also, other than keeping the boom from lifting, we found that the little 3:1 vang that we had was pretty useless in terms of adjusting sail shape. That, and our topping lift was not adjustable. We have decided to go the route of a rigid boom vang from garhauer. We are in the process of installing it, but It looks great. For $187, it is by far the least expensive way to get a rigid boom vang, and the quality is top rate.
