Is there any contraindications to putting the topping lift on the backstay before the splitter and not having a line from the top of the mast? It seems like there would be less line clutter this way. TIA
Many boats do this but remember the boom is constrained to the centreline of the boat whilst the topping lift is connected. i.e. it must be disconnected before raising the mainsail so one must have a rigid vang.
Its more work to raise a sail with the 'clip to backstay' type of lift. I switched that out for a full topping lift on my first boat just for that reason.
