Hello, I just purchased a 1987 O'Day 302 and I'm having it transported from Mattituk, NY (Long Island) to Lake Champlain. My Question is: How long is the Topping-lift line supposed to be and/or where can I get one? Thanks Anxiously waiting her arrival Michel ~~~_/)~~~

it depends
It depends on how your topping lift is configured, but generally if it is anchored to the end of the boom it has to be long enough to run the length of the luff to a turning block on the mast top, then down the length of the mast to either a turning block at the base of the mast (or cleat), or if you are running it back to the cockpit, the length from the base of the mast to the cleat plus enough for a tail. If the anchor end at the aft end of the boom has a snap shackle then you will need an adequate amount to create an eye splice or knot, whichever you prefer to use. A good way to measure for a topping lift is to use the main halyard as a measuring substitute, then using a messenger line bring down the main to do the actual measurement. Another way is to measure the sum of the luff and leech of you main, then add the amount of length from the mast base to the cleat plus a tail. Any braided dacron line of adequate size should be available for a quality marine or hardware store.

O'Day 302
Michel, I own a 1987 Oday 302 on Lake Champlain, We should get together and compair boats. My ODay 302 does not have a topping lift, it was equiped with lazy jacks from the factory. I have thought of adding one and a spinaker halyard. The topping lift would be the same legnth as the main halyard. The legnth is in the owners manual which i do not have with me. The jib halyard curently doubles as the spinnaker halyard once the genoa is on the isofurl. I will get you a legnth. I would use the same line a the main halyard so it could be a spare if you have problems. If you need a copy of the owners manual Email me directly. Good luck with the new boat! Thanks for the replies guys, it helps me understand that the topping lift wasn't necessary. Larry, sure would like to meet sometime this summer. I'm leaving for europe next sunday and will return on June 1st. Will have boat transported probably by the weekend of June 21st. I guess at Gaines Marine as they have a travel lift which I need to lift off of transport trailer. Would like to have a little assistance as this is my first "big boat" with wheel steering.( I know I'll be posting a few questions on the forum) My previous mistress ;D was a Tanzer 7.5 with tiller and outboard.
