Topping Lift / rigid boom vang

Hello,

Could anyone tell me if a topping lift should be used while sailing ?
I recently purchased a vega and it isn't equiped with a topping lift,
but the previous ownes have installed a rigid boom vang. New to this
whole sailing thing and don't have a clue. I have sailed without the
topping lift and haven't noticed anything odd, but then again I am a
novice.

Thanks,

Hi Kenneth
topping lift is useful when (slab) reefing as you can "scandalize" the
mainsail (heave up on the topping lift) which makes it easier to
tighten the reefing pendant to outhaul the sail as the sail is
depowered somewhat.

Well thats what I do when in a hurry when I'm out on my own:
drop the tiller, dump the main sheet, scurry to the mast, dump the
vang/kicking strap, heave up the topping lift, ease the main halyard,
attach the reefing cringle to the hook, tighten the main halyard, heave
on the reefing line, ease the topping lift, tighten the vang, scurry
back to the cockpit, tighten the main sheet and take the tiller....

Whew..

Amazing how quickly you can do all the above when you see a big black
squall coming... :)

But maybe the rigid vang would prevent the boom from rising much?

The topping lift is only used to hold the boom up when you don't have the
sail up - but the rigid vang does the same thing. If you have a topping lift
it should be slacked when sailing so as not to interfere with the set of the
main.

I have a rigid vang and often take the main halyard and attach it to the end
of the boom when I am at dock and anchor to lift the boom a little more than
the vang does, but not so much as to stress the vang itself.

What brand of vang do you have?

Now and again I take up on the topping lift if the wind is light and I want the mainsail leech to be able to curve. Nicholas Walsh
