Topping Lift Question

O'Day 23-2 Barnegat Bay
I have a 23' O'day, my boom topping lift line is very weathered, I just got this boat hadn't had time to replace it. I wanted to wait to step the mast and replace it until the end of the season when it is on land. I was thinking about bypassing the boom topping lift for now and attaching a line from the back of the boom to the backstay for the short term. Has anyone ever done this, or seen anyone do this, or see an issue with that?

If it was my boat I would replace it while it is in the water by sewing a tag line on the whipped end without an eye and pull it through. The reverse the process with a new topping lift.

If you do connect it to the backstay be absolutely sure to disconnect it before you hoist the sail. The backstay tethers, whole common, are considered a little dangerous. If the wind fills the sail while it’s still on the backstay it will be hard to release, and there will be a lot of pressure heeling the boat.

Welcome aboard. I recommend the tag (messenger) line route. Its easy and straight-forward. I replaced 2 halyards and a topping lift using this technique. Below is a link with a video that shows the basics. I basically followed the method shown and had no problems. It is still a good idea to inspect the sheaves (and rigging) at the masthead when you do eventually step the mast, but unless there is obvious chafing or the line hangs up, it can most likely wait until the end of the season. You will be happy you did. Topping lifts are useful in port for raising the boom out of the way (easier on the head) and particularly useful for taking pressure off the main when reefing.
