We set up Grasshopper II - a 1994 H26 - everything is OK except for two items One - the topping lift. How is this line attached. According to the manual - it is 35 feet long; 1/4" in diameter. Is it attached to the top of the mast and then directly to the end of the boom? Does it go from the boom - to the top of the mast and then down the mast so it can be controlled? At the end of the boom is it tied on? Is there a special fitting? Does it somehow go thru the boom? Two - the gooseneck - How is the front of the foot of the main sail attached to the gooseneck of the boom? I have what the manual calls Rams Horns - but I don't seem to have a pin thru which to attach the sail? Is the sail 'held' by the rams horns? Am I missing a piece of my boom? Snake the topping lift
Our 95 H26 originally had the topping lift tied at the masthead and the end of the boom. But that didn't look right. The end of the boom had an unused roller. The mast end of the boom had an unused jam cleat. Putting 2 and 2 together we purchased a new line, attached it at the masthead, ran it through the roller at the end of the boom, then snaked it through the boom to the jam cleat. Viola', the boom was simply and easily lifted. As for the rams horn, the foot of the sail had a large grommet. We secured the sail foot to the boom by putting the rams horn through the grommet then tensioning the sail. We also used it for reefing. Markdb

Our H26 is setup this way - Topping lift: One line runs down from top of mast with a loop at the end. A second line is run through the boom. The tail end on the boom line is attached to the topping lift line from the mast, the other end is then used to control the height of the boom. This setup allows easy control of the boom, while facilitating breakdown of the boom and mast for trailering. Gooseneck: The top of our gooseneck has a hole drilled through which allows us to use a D-shackle, passed through the grommet at the foot of the luff, to attach the sail to the gooseneck. The rams horn is then only used when reefed. Hope this helps.

I like TJ's idea of putting a loop near the boom end of the topping lift and then attaching a separate line to the loop and running it thru the boom. That way you can remove the boom w/o having to unthread the line. We also use a D shackle to secure the tack of the sail. Rams horns are just for reefing. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

My topping lift is tied off at the top of the mast and has a loop with a tail. To the loop we tie a bowline, and lead that line through the boom to the cleat under the gooseneck. The tail lets me let out the topping lift before leaving the dock, with the tail tied off to a cleat, then when I am ready to rais sail, I uncleat the tail to drop the boom. It's also useful for tying up the flaked mainsheet when leaving the boat at the dock.
