Tony, I think you nailed it, but you couldn't possibly reef without it. I recently converted mine from metal to line, as it was obviously chafing the sail. SEANSHINE
In very light winds the weight of the boom pulls the mainsail too flat and tight to have an efficient shape. By tightening the topping lift, you can get a more efficient sail shape.
