I have been sailing on the 27 for two years. I have been sailing all my life 43 yrs. we sail a weekley race on wednsdays @Riverton Yacht Club. rivertonyachtclub.org We have great time . We have never gotten over 5 knots it could be the gauge but I doubt it. Do we need or do they a travler for this boat?? Any tips to gain some speed?? I believe the water tank to be full to obtain optimal performance is this correct? I look forward to any advise. Rick Stuart, Rick@southjerseypickup.com is my e-mail THANK YOU

Hull speed

The hull speed of the 27 is ~6.3 kts & you should be able to reach this easily enough if the bottom is clean and you don't have a huge prop or other drag-creating appendages. The bottom should be as clean & smooth as possible. The more weight in the boat, the more she'll displace so when you're racing you might want to think abt. unloading anything that isn't necessary. My 27 has a 10 gal water tank: that's = 100 lbs. Why would that help you sail faster? Try to trim the boat so the transom isn't creating drag. Don't know a helluva lot abt. the sails except that you can spend a bunch of $$$ on racing sails. If the rig & sail trim gives you a lot of weather helm and you have to use a lot of rudder to overcome this, that will create drag & slow the boat down too. Check your speed with a GPS; perhaps the gauge is reading slow. I'm not into racing so those are just general comments that apply to most boats: the dedicated racing guys probably have all sorts of advice to add.

ck it with gps

I'm up here at Anchor YC in Bristol Rick. East Enders race in front of burlington island on thursday nites!. I've a oday 30. the current on the river really throws off the onboard guages from what I've seen. most of us ck speed with the gps units. fair winds! Denise

Something has to be wrong -- I have a 27 & it reaches hull speed (6.4) fairly quickly. The only immediate thing I can think of is a dirty bottom. It should definitely not top out at 5.
