Have a new 26m with 60HP Evinrude E-tec. Top speed with light load and foils retracted is
only 15mph at sea level. Tried w ballast empty and not much faster. Anyone doing any better? If so what prop are you running? RPM is only 4100.

Thanks for your replies.

I have a m26 with a 50 hp motor and with a lightly loaded boat I can get 18 mph. I did have to get a different prop because I was not getting more than 14 on the stock prop and not turning enough rpms just like you. Your owners manual will tell you where your rpms should be for wide open throttle, probably around 5800 to 6200rpm. Keep in mind that a prop that will work well on a lightly loaded boat will not work as well on a boat with 3 or 4 people on board and with all the stuff we tend to cram into our boats so aim for a prop that will run at the high end of the rpm range on a light boat. I got lucky and the first prop I got worked great but from past experience it usually takes a few tries to get it right. There is a company that makes plastic props with interchangeable blades which would be one way to try different settings. The Macgregor Sailers forum usually has more info on m and x 26 boats. Good sailing.

Sounds like you're way over-propped. The engine should be getting 5500-6000 at WOT. Lugging it like that isn't doing the engine any favors, and you're missing out on a lot of speed. Sniff around macgregorsailors.com for specifics, as there are a lot of folks with that M with E-TEC combo.

you should be running something like a 14 X 11 to get you up to 6000rpm unloaded and 5700 with a fully loaded boat.running full throttle with full ballast is a waste of fuel.

Me too, I still subscribe to it being about the journey, not the destination and not paying 6 bucks to go a mile
