running lights

Do you have a switch labeled "Running Lights"? That's what mine are labeled as. LaDonna

Masthead light

I doubt yours is a tri-color running light so it's probably considered an anchor light. But your transom light is part of your running light set-up (you do have red/green bowlights don't you?). LaDonna

This is basic information.....

....every boater should know. The Coast Guard will cite you for not having the proper identification lights and/or not using them correctly. More importantly you pose a danger to yourself and others. Please take the time to look at a basic boating book or any of the free Coast Guard publications concerning boating safety. The top/masthead light is visible for 360 deg and has its own circuit because that is your ANCHOR light. The light halfway down the mast is usually called the MAST light, also on it's own circuit, and is used to indentify a boat running under power (motor on). The white light on the transom is called the stern light. It is visible 120 deg aft, and, with the red and green bow lights on the same circuit, comprise the RUNNING lights. I leave it to you to learn their proper usage. good luck.

Proper lighting

Mike, a good place to start to check out lighting needs relative to size of vessel and usage would be the West Marine Catalogue. You could also go to their web site www.westmarine.com and follow the links for the "The West Advisor" articles. These articles address the latest US Coast Guard regulations.

lighting question

Joe Ford................. This guy comes to the list looking for help..... and all you can do is give the guy a hard time. Maybe you could have given the guy some help instead of just busting his chops . I thought the purpose of this list.... was to help each other and share our experiences and..... yes..... our mistakes too. Probably be a long time before he looks to this website for advise again! Just my 2 cents worth.

Sorry Ken....

....I should have made my point more gently. I hope I didn't offend or discourage Mike. By the way, my comment on the stern light was incorrect. The arc is 135 deg not the 120 I previously stated. -bad day at the office-

Mast/Anchor light

Mike, You must have a much newer or nicer C-22 than I just purchased. I have only the foredeck light. But I have only bare wires hanging out of the mast! I want to overnight on Eagle Creek Res. here on the west side of Indy, but I better have a light on or the fishermen will ram me. I'm not above rewiring the mast, but I want to know how to run all the wires into the cabin and keep it all waterproof. But I need to trailer everytime so I need something easy to connect and disconnect. Do you have waterproof connectors on the cabin top and do they work??? Thanks, Jay Beery

If your masthead anchor light is inoperative, I believe (someone will correct me if I'm wrong) it is acceptable to use a windproof lamp hung from the backstay (or wherever). We've used a Weems & Plath one but I know there are a few other brands. They're also great for below decks when you're at the dock. Might want to look into that option. LaDonna
