Too much smoke to sail?

I sail on the Columbia River behind Grand Coulee dam in northeastern Washington. Because of the fires in our area the smoke has reduced the visibility to as low as 50 to 75 yards at times and the air quality is very bad.
After seeing how bad the fire has been on the people in the area I can't even think about going out.
As of yesterday afternoon they pulled the firefighters off the lines and out of the hills as the danger of getting caught by the fire was too great. 2 small cities and well over 100 homes and over 200,000 acres have burned. Winds have been 25 to 35 mph. The terrain is so rugged that planes and dozers are of little use in much of the land.
This is the bad one.

We were sailing on Lake Coeur d'Alene, ID (100 miles E-SE) this past weekend. On Saturday, the sky was total haze with smoke and a small amount of ash collected on the deck overnight. Sunday was clearer.
