Hey All, This is not intended to start a Hunter bash, so please don't let that happen. However, we need some engine advice. Our brand new Hunter 356 has been in the commissioning and final prep stages for the last few weeks. Yesterday, we went to the docks to see how things were going; as the dealer said we could do anytime. Upon stepping aboard, I noticed a post-it note on the starter panel saying "STOP!! do not start this boat there is a problem". We never intended to start it; we only wanted to check on the progress below deck. So, we found the key in the storage location where the dealer said it would be. On the key float there was another post-it note secured stating, "STOP! DO NOT START THIS BOAT. THE ENGINE WAS OVERFILLED WITH OIL. STARTING MAY DAMAGE THE ENGINE." YIKES we thought! We know the engine has been run several times. At a minimum when it was delivered to the boat show site, when we did our sea trial and when the dealer did their sea trial last week. However, what we don't know is if someone just recently added oil (thus overfilling) and not run or if it has been overfilled on all of the occasions when the engine was run. It seems strange to me that they would have just added oil, as the engine is brand new. So... we thought we would pose this account in this forum to see what others thought prior to talking to the dealer tomorrow. At a minimum we thought we would ask the dealer to put in writing that this took place, in the event that we have engine problems down the road once we are out of warranty. Any engine experts have any other thoughts on what we should do? Thanks in advance, S

Sandy How about just checking the dipstick? Probably not a bad idea for YOU to document this condition in a letter from you to the dealer. I once overfilled my oil (just a bit), and asked the same question. The answer was: just take out the excess. Never had a problem. Good luck. Stu

Just ask the dealer
Maybe someone added oil by accident and they haven't drained the excess yet. Find out what his explaination is. Also check the oil to see how much over it is and see how clean it is. This could be some sort of indication.

too much oil
Just ask the dealer, and get the details-too much oil can cause problems, but probably less in a diesel than in a gas engine. The engines in Hunters are apparently shipped without oil-Hunter doesn't run them-and the dealer fills it as part of prep. It may just be that they accidently filled it twice, and needed to come back with a pump to suck it out
