Too Cool?

Noticed Sunday that our 272 diesel (10 hp. Westerbeke) is running very cool; but I don't know if it is too cool. It was a perfectly calm day so we motored all over our lake...not stopping for over 3 hours....I looked at the temp. guage during this ride and noticed the temp was approx. 90 degrees. It never varied....Engine ran great...was putting out water & such....my question; is this low of temp. indicative of an engine issue? Have not changed the impeller yet this year, but will do so soon....also noticed there is a slight reduction in the amount of water out the exhaust, but certainly enough comes out to eliminate any concern....The first 10 years we owned this boat it came out like a gusher, but not so any more....should I replace the temp. sender unit or look at any other possible issues. Thanks for your advice. Pat

What engine? RW or FW cooled?

Have you checked that your inlet is clear? Have you checked your strainer?

Reduction in flow from obstructions such as strainer, HX, intake etc would be cause for an increase in temperature. Good to check all these if you have noticed reduced flow anyhow, but if your noticing you're running cooler than what is normal for your boat, likely need a new sender or guage or both. Get an infra red thermometer and confirm temps at various locations.

Stu, it uses fresh water from the lake, w/heat exchanger and overflow tank in lazarette; which I filled yesterday...I am not aware of a strainer as part of the system....I've got the Westerbeke drawings in my car..will look tonight...could it be a thermostat issue...several years ago, about when this began (i.e. running cool) I ordered two new thermostats from Westerbeke and was unclear which to put on...i did not have the manual the day we installed the new thermostat so could not easily match the number of the original one...I know this makes me look dumb, but I remember us discussing at the time which would be the correct thermostat number..thank you for your htoughts...

thank you...sender was the issue at the time.....I'm going to order a new sender because now, that Paul mentions it, the sender failing to go off was the initial issue a couple years ago.....so if a sender (or lack thereof) can cause it to run cool, that could be it...Pat
