Newport 30 MK-III Buffalo
I bought an '87 Newport 30. Toilet is a Jabsco 59128-0000. I've been looking through the forums but cannot figure out where this joker valve is. Is there any schematic I can get? Are all Jabsco toilets the same?

I fixed mine with a check

No, not a check valve but a check for cash! I replaced the ever disposable Jabsco witha Raritan. I found the Jabsco pumps last about 3.75 years on averabe with limited use. So far the Raritan is doing well.

Time for a hew toilet

The 59128 was the model # for the "Bryden Boy"--a Canadian version of the Jabsco manual made in Canada under a licensing agreement. Bryden went out of business in the mid-'80s...so yours has to be one from one of the last production runs, and original to your boat...making it at least 20 years old. Jabsco continued to offer a service kit for it, but discontinued it about 5 years ago...no other parts have been available for at least 10 years. In ALL toilets, the joker valve is located in the discharge fitting...it's a cup-shaped rubber one way valve...the flange serves as the gasket that seals the connection between the discharge fitting and the pump housing. The current Jabsco joker valve should fit it, but replacing it won't solve your problem...it has nothing to do with bringing flush water in, it's a backflow preventer in the discharge. My guess: the flapper valve at the top of the pump has failed. Every other seal, o-ring, valve and gasket in the pump has to be on its last legs too, if it hasn't also failed by now. So it's time for a new toilet. Andy's description of the current Jabsco manual toilet as "disposable" is right on the money. 15-20 years ago they made a decent product for the price...but nothing they've made in the last 7-8 years is likely to last more than a year or two, if that long. The Raritan PH II--or PHC, which is the same pump, but on a compact base to fit in a smaller space--is the best choice for a replacement. It costs more--about $275 if you know where to shop--but is the only toilet under $500 that'll give you more than a few years of trouble free service. Keep it lubricated, rebuild it every 5-6 years, and it'll last for at least 20 years. It also pumps twice as efficiently as any other toilet in its price range. You can check it out here: http://www.raritaneng.com/products/toilets/manual/ph_2.html

Broken e rings

It may be due to a broken E ring on the plunger part of the pump. Older Jabsco toilets have E rings, one on top, the other on the bottom of the plunger. My guess is the one on the bottom is broken off. This allows you to pump but the plunger doesn't move giving you the symptoms you mention. If you find it is the problem and choose to repair it make sure you use stainless E rings. If you use most typical E rings they wont hold up and will rust in short order. New Jabsco toilets can be had for apx $115 at West Marine. They now use a lock nuts in place of the E rings. Had the old version in a 91 Beneteau and after finally dealing with the mess one last time I finally replaced it and never had the problem again. If you do choose to fix it you need to remove the screws surounding the pump handle. If the bottom E ring is broken the pump handle and shaft will pull out but the plunger will have to be retrieved. You need to disassemble the pump tube to do so. If your lucky the top E ring is broken and you'll be able to replace it without fully removing the handle and shaft. I do not have any diagrams to share but you may be able to find them on Jabsco's website. Oh since it won't flush be prepared for just about anything emerging from the assembly. Surgical gloves and lots of paper towels, disenfectant, etc are a must. Good luck Mike

Learned that the hard way

When I sold my Hunter 30, I decided it was time to rebuild the head before the new owner (next door neighbor) took over. I bought the rebuild kit and spent the better part of a day working on that discusting mess before I gave up and bought a new head. I hope it lasts them longer than Peggy suggested it would. The new one is also a Jabsco.

Jabsco's aren't that bad

Peggy, I've had and still have Jabscos on both of my boats and they last a lot longer than what you stated. On my three year old boat I've got two of them and they work fine. I've replaced the joker valves once. I live on this boat in the Bahamas six months of the year so they get a good workout. The only maintenance is lubrication once every week or so. This takes literally five minutes as the pump has a big nut on it which comes off easily. On my other boat the current Jabsco was installed in 1995 and still works like new, nothing replaced so far. I think it replaced a Bryden Boy which was the original head when the boat was built in 1988. I'm quite happy with them and you sure can't beat the price Rick I Toronto
