I purchased this outboard from Defender industries at the end of December of 2010.
I have maybe 1 hour on it. For some reason it blew out the plastic plug that covers the shift linkage adjustment access in the lower unit. As a result exhaust is now exiting this hole and sounds very loud.
Otherwise the unit runs fine.
Why did this happen?
How do I get another plug?

Good luck with any warranty claim, I'm sure I will have to bring to a service dealer, (my gas and my time. There will be some sort of deductable or, I'm sorry we have to charge you with a shop fee!! I'm hoping I can get someone to pop one of those little grommets #369-61016-0 in the mail and be done with it (thanks for the parts book link Merlinuxo). I would like to know why it popped out in the first place, anyone else ever have this problem?

I haven't but am new to this motor. Maybe it snagged on something and just popped out?

Witzend-

I had the same thing happen to me with my 3.5hp Nissan (alias Tohatsu) a few years ago and I am trying to remember what was the cause. It was on start-up, just like your issue. It may have been that I did not replace it tightly after changing my impeller, but now I am guessing.

If I can remember, I will repost here. Sorry....

I guess. Was it hard to start and maybe got raw fuel into the exhaust?
That would have made a pretty good pop.

I'm feeling very little sympathy for you since you haven't even bothered to call a dealer or Tohatsu for feedback. You've just assumed that they will blow you off or try to overcharge for warranty work.. Why the hell did you buy a new motor with a warranty if you didn't think it would be any good?

Not asking for any sympathy here, just wondered if this has happened to anyone else and what may have caused it. I bought a new motor not for a warranty, but for a better chance of less problems (probably should of bought a Yanaha or Honda, but the price was too god to pass on. Of course if something serious goes wrong, I would have to go to battle with them. And BTW I have contacted both Defender and Tohatsu by email to ask if they could send me one in the mail, and so far no response. I will be calling next to try to get an answer if I get no response.
A #7 rubber cork fits the hole with a big zip tie to keep it there, for the time being. Might keep one in your tool kit just in case.
I like the unburned gas in the exhaust theory.

Please pick up the phone and call me 800-628-8225 x.100. Once we know what part you need (have to check the nomenclature) be happy to order it for you. Not something we stock.

For what it is worth, I checked the e-mail logs and found no inquiry regarding this issue. Sorry if you did not get a response, but I did not find the inquiry.

Hey Stephan,
Thanks for being so aware! Looks like corporate did respond and will send me a grommet. My email to defender got kicked back(fat fingered address, my outlook is not allowing me to cut and paste address from previous emails??, and I did not have you in my contacts list)

Hello Mr. Hollowell,
I will send you a replacement plug. The plug was probably not secured in
the proper position causing it to come loose during operation. The part
should leave our Warehouse today and arrive early next week to you.

Outstanding. Both Co's rising to the situation. Well done.
I have had a Tohatsu 4hp for the last 2 years and it has served me very well.

Glad it worked out, Witz. I was going to reply to you that I had a similar issue with Nissan about a lack of response. I sent them an email (twice!)through the "contact us" section of their website, asking for some info about my Nissan 8hp outboard. They never responded.

Just to point out two things.

#1 Stephan is the OWNER of Defender and this should be a good example of why they are one of my most highly respected chandleries.

#2 While Sailboatowners.com does not sell outboards they do sell just about everything else, and host our forum for free, and like Stephan L. of Defender DO monitor the forums to make sure customers STAY happy customers.

Both of these businesses go above and beyond! Please keep our own SBO store in mind too.

I am also glad Witz got his issue resolved!
