I have a 5 HP Tohatsu OB on my 1996 Hunter 19. It has given good service and except for the vibration runs good. My problem with it is that unless you run the fuel out of it and turn off the fuel valve, when you tilt it up, it leaks fuel. This is fine when I am putting the boat up for a while but a nuisance when I have motored out to the point that it is time to start sailing and quit motoring. It runs for several minutes after the valve is closed so the choice is to do that or leave the motor down while sailing. Anyone have any suggestions?

Check the fuel tank

I had a similar problem with the same engine. The problem turned out to be a crack near the top of the fuel tank. It only became a problem when the motor was tilted up out of the water.

I think tank is OK

Thanks for the response but I think the tank is OK. If you turn off the fuel valve, close the vent, and run all of the gas out of the carburetor and fuel line, it won't leak, even with a full tank, bu I will remove the hood and inspect the tank anyway.

Tohatsu 5hp

I have the same boat and the same engine and also had a drip when I first bought the boat a year ago. The drip was through the vent in cap on the top of the tank. I replaced the cap and all was solved. If this is the same issue for you, it is a simple fix, just beware that Tohatsu changed the design of the engine a couple of years ago and the cap is different. It sounds like you may have a different problem if the gas is dripping from under the cover. You may have a fuel line that is dried out and cracked or loose connection.

Only leaks if:

The motor does not leak if you turn off the fuel line, close the vent and run all of the gas out of the carburetor before tilting the motor up. I probably should take off the engine cover and make it leak to see whether the gas is leaking out of the carb air intake (my suspicion). My other small motor (a Johnson) does not leak under these circumstances. My question to the board was first to see if this was an inherent characteristic of the Tohatsu 5HP and if it isn't, what steps have worked for others to fix the problem? If this is normal for this motor, I didn't want to have the carb float checked etc. Thanks to all for the responses so far.
