Tohatsu 2-stroke motor impeller replacement

I am replacing the impeller on my 1987 Tohatsu 2-stroke 5hp outboard engine. I have the manual and have completed the steps up to removing the bearing carrier. It will not budge and I'm not sure whether it screws on to the gearcase or simply pulss off. The picture is unclear in the manual. Help, please..... thanks.

I just replaced the impeller on a larger model Tohatsu with no problems. What bearing carrier do you mean?

David, thanks for responding.

After the propeller is removed, there is a part which is bolted top and bottom to the gearcase and it seems to be holding the propeller shaft assembly in place.

Kris, are you sure you have to remove the prop? All outboard water pump impellers that I have ever changed were accessed by splitting the leg at the cavitation plate.
