I Would Like to remove my Toe Rails and does any one know if I can remove the whole rail at once ? My concern is that the Hull/Deck joint is relying on all these bolts.

Toe Rail

Hi Terry, I am compleating an extensive overhall to this great old boat, and will be repairing many top side issues.(compression, delamination and loss of no-skid) Upon compleation I would like a smooth clutter free surface to repaint so I am removing all hardware.

Screws and bolts.

Bill: As I remember, these hulls are screwed together with wood screws and then they are thru bolted with the toe rail in place. I though that Hunter used a buytl material between the deck and hull joint. So if you are worried about the deck blowing away, it won't. I hope you know what you are getting into when you do this. I think you are going to find that some of these bolts are going to be very difficult to get to. I would check out every bolt before I removed the first one. I is going to be a two person job (plus one person to shuttle brew for the crew).

big job

Bill, I admire your tenacity to 'do the job right'. I confess I would not go as far as removing the toe rails. I would only point out that I think you will discover that each bolt in the toe rail is bedded with compound. That means a couple of things. First, the bolts will probably require cleaning with a wire wheel unless you intend to replace with new s.s. hardware. Also I don't think it would be a good idea to re-install the bolts without re-bedding them (and using clean hardware). It is possible a leak can develop in that hull deck joint. I discovered this when I replaced my stanchions. I did not re-bed the toe rail bolts and a leak developed in the deck/hull joint. It would be a shame if you re-installed the toe rail without bedding the bolts and discovered leaks galore. Good luck

Hi Bill, It stands to reason why you want to ...

remove the toe rail, but like Mike indicates, it's a big job. For what you're doing, as long as the joint is still sound and not in need of repair, I would tent the toe rail and other hardware using the blue masking tape and plastic that painters use. Terry

Thanks

Thanks for all your advice! I will be removing the rails. I've gone this far!!! (removed and rebuilt scag and rudder, pealed the bottom, glassed in a new I-beam in the builge as the old one was rusted to paper thin, removed the Yanmar and fuel tank, replaced the rotted out hot water tank. This sounds like a big investment but this boat is a keeper. I'll keep all of you up to date on my progress and of course ask for more advice along the way.
