Toe Rail Leaks

We've discovered water leaking into the cabin from the bolts fastening the toe rail to the deck on our 1984 hunter 37-c. The problem is on both sides of the hull and from stem to stern. Has anyone encountered this problem and how was it alleviated? Also, the boat has a yanmar marine diesel - what rpm's can or should it be run on for normal cruising? Thanks for the help!

RPM's

If you have the 3QM30 (raw water cooled) , then the max rpm is about 2600, so cruising rpm should be roughly 2100-2300 rpm (I cruise at 2200). I have not experienced any leaking at the toe rail, so I can't help you there.

Time to rebed

We had leaks on the toe rail when we bought the boat, They removed the bolts and rebeded them with 3M 5200. They pressurized the cabin with a big fan and squirted soapy water on the fittings until they found the ones that bubbled and worked on those. The end result is no current leaks.

Toerail leaks -- yeah, we got those

Hi, my 79 37c had loads of leaks, toerail included. Didn't have to rebed the toerial, just tightened up each of the scores of machine screws holding the toerial on. Need 2 people, one with a screwdrive up top, one contortionist below with a wrench, socket, extensions, etc. You actually can get at them all if you are ingenious and supple enough. Stopped virtually all leaks. Also, check the drains on the hull -- had leaks in the hose and clamps there, which you can't see unless you take apart some paneling. Consider shooting some silicone sealant into the traveler holes also. That worked for leaks I had at the front traveler. Getting to the bolts in the bow sampson bit and chocks requires clamping an open end wrench to a broom stick, but it can be done while someone up top tightenes things. Check around your dorades, too. One of mine had some leaks -- time consuming to fix, but not difficult with epoxy and filler. Check your ice box drain; mine needed to be rebedded, and leaked water onto the galley floor until I fixed it. After all of this, I was able to cut leaks down to just one mysterious one that gives me a few ounces of water under the engine after a real hard rainstorm, and a few tiny leaks from the cockpit locker hinges. Will get around to these sometime. Good luck. Capt Walt.

Toe Rails & RPMs

We had toe rail leaks on our 83 H31. I obtained the torque spec from Hunter then re-torqued all the bolts holding the toe rail - no more leaks. There is an old thread about Yanmar cruising RPMs. 80% Wide Open Throttle is the recommended number. Check your engine spec for WOT.
