Toe rail leaks

My H31 has developed leaks along the toe rails. My plan is to raise them and re-bed them with 5200. Does any experience or thoughts on this subject? Thanks

Have you tried to just tighten the bolts.

That goop Hunter uses is pretty permanent. That's the first thing I would try.

I would not use 5200.

Chandler: How do you know that it is leaking on the toe rail? If this is the case, you may want to use a torque wrench and a large screw drive to tighten all of the bolts to a constant setting. I think that Hunter used a butyl material between the hull and deck. This is not a place that they commonly leak. Removing the entire toe rail is going to be a big job so I would try something else first.

Been there done that

Although it looks like a big job it's simple and doesn't take long. I found several fractures under the rail on mine that I repaired. Both Hunter and my surveyor recommended 5200. I used it knowing the next owner would have difficulty if it ever needed removal again. My 1983 h34 appeared to have no bedding compound under the rail although the factory told me thay used some kind of tape. If you pressurize the cabin with a shop vacumm exhaust or leaf blower you can spray soapy water on the deck and see bubbles where the rail is leaking. Have fun!

Daryl, interesting.

Mine is a 86. Hunter used goop that can best be described as a putty like glue. After 18 years it is still working the same as new. The problem with the stuff is that it also oozed inside the hull. It gets on anything you pull through the wire chase. The good part is, it doesn't leak. But I can't imagine adding 5200 to the mix. Anybody know what this muck is?

perhaps one other spot to check

In my case it wasn't the toerail that leaked but the forward anchor locker latching receiver that had left a trail just forward of my mast on the cabin wall. Take a plastic sandwich bag, slip it over the fastenting bolt on the anchor lid , press some RTV caulk into the bolt receiving hole and insert/fasten down the bolt into the receiving hole. When it dries, trim excess RTV - no more leak! Jim

Are you sure it is the Toe Rail

Where do you see the water in the boat? why do you think it is the toe rail? water can have a funny way of getting around. My mast leaks water through the wiring tube (to be fixed in a couple weeks) the water shows up in the outboard where the small lights are mounted on the rib by the forward bulkhead, and sometimes the carpet on the bulkhead just outboard of there gets wet. Location of water

The bulk of the water comes in to port in the aft berth just aft of the hanging locker. The other comes in to port midway back in the v-berth. Chan

Something a little less invasive

On my 1989 Hunter 30g I to had a leak which presented itself as water running down the starboard side of the inside of the rear berth. After tightening the toe rail bolts, I used a product called Captain Cauly Creaping crack sealant applying several appilcations along the inside edge of the toe rail. To date it has worked sucessfully. Good Luck.

hey chandler

Chandler I didn't realize at I was responding to you, sorry. After seeing the small amount of mast compression you have going i would bet you are getting water down the wiring tube inside the mast this will show up in odd places since it will run down the rib in the overhead to the outboard and can run down the inside of the liner in either direction. I would recomend that as a first place to start. You could also remove the small port and starboard lights that are mounted on the underside of the rib i would bet that when it rains that water will run out of the holes where the lights come out. I get a about 8-16 oz of water out of each one every time we get a good rain. But since we know your toe rail has been replaced i wouldn't totally discount that idea, but i would bet that the major problem is the mast wiring tube leaking water into the area between the head liner and the deck. How was the trip down the ICW, did you cross FL in the canal or go around, I would be very interested to hear about the trip. Jim

h 27 leaks

my h 27 leaks on the starbord v berth and the aft port berth. there's a apinnaker pole mount about 4 or so foot away and a window about the same. also the toe rail. it seems to be coming through the seam in the aft berth i can more or less see it. haven't got around to doing anything about it, though. spent the night on it last night though, it was gorgeous weather. we watched my big greek wedding and then it was morning and the ducks were swimming around. to bad i had to go to work.
