Got the Nissan / Tohatsu back from the second repair shop who called me to say come and get your motor. " I have checked out the fuel system the ignition and everything is right , I don't know what is wrong and I did not fix it. There is no bill on this one because I don't understand why it stops after running in gear at just less than half throttle. I have given up so take it to a Tohatsu repair shop."

I went on line and found three Nissan Tohatsu dealers under 75 miles from my zip code. First one is a place I had the alternator installed three years ago. Shop is filthy and the work was not done when I was told. Second was Cabela's in Michigan, and the third was a small place on the Maumee River in Grand Rapids Ohio. I called and told them my story and said I was loosing faith in the motor and need help. Instead of running in a tank he suggested we put it on a metal JON boat and run it in the river, but first lets take a look at the spark plug. Well it was in fact carbon ed up with the black soot. He went in and got a new plug and put it in. ( I also put a new plug in this spring at launch time ) so I never checked it nor did the other two repair shops. As you can bet,, The motor runs Super good and I believe it is now fixed..

This time I have cleaned the plastic tank, put 89 octane in, using Lucas gas stabilizer, put a rather large filter at the gas tank and a fresh filter inside the motor. The Nissan guy asked if I ran the motor with the fuel hose disconnected until the engine died. I said no but will now do it. Well he said you don't have to because we just talked about that during our last schooling and the conclusion was that by leaving the fuel in the carb, you chance not drying up the gaskets,, of course it
doesn't hurt. I will pull the fuel hose because so many now do with good success.

I'll keep posted if more issues occur.

Chuck,

Great stuff....sounds like you have yourself a great shop to deal with, make sure to send them a bottle at Christmas!

Sparkplug, eh? Make sure to keep spares...also, I see you are doing the stabilizer and filter, let us know how the rest of the season goes with that.

I was interested, however, in the discussion of not running out the gas. I was always told that I should do that. Anyone else doing anything different?

Definitely found a great shop to get Tohatsu / Nissan Motor service. His name is Chris and certainly deserves this plug.

His web site

http://www.riverlures.com/about.htm

And yes a bottle at Christmas will happen..

When I returned the motor to the boat yesterday and got everything hooked up, decided to start it up. My normal procedure is to pull the choke out, turn throttle to "start" position, and slowly pull out the start rope three times. Then I give the start rope a swift pull and she usually starts right up. When I slowly pulled, it wanted to start. Wow it never did that before.

Chris explained that these little motors usually run good and even the older ones seem to run forever. He said that the dealer / factory relationship is excellent by going on line or by phone he gets service questions answered quickly.

My confidence is starting to come back again. Even the second shop that did not charge me for his time trying to find the problem, was treating his customers fairly. Thus keeping his good reputation. He gets a bottle at Christmas too. Hee He.

Yup I'll keep posted for the rest of the season.

I don't have an outboard on my boat, BUT

having fooled around with small engines all my life, one thing that is always Paramount. keep a new spare plug around. if a small engine is acting up, be that lawn mower, chainsaw, weed wacker, dingy outboard, motorcycle, etc. change out the plug first. if its black with soot then the likely culprit is too rich a mixture. could be carb, bad fuel, clogged air cleaner. if there's an oily film on the plug then its usually something different. two strokes are notorious for oil fouled plugs, 4 strokes too rich a mixture.
bottom line always check the plug first.

4 stroke success

Taking the posted advise I ordered the filter. Got a call from the owner in AL who advised me of a delay in shipment. To save boxes they reuse in coming boxes and the one I got was marked explosives so UPS caught it in their distribution center and made him send an employee to retrieve it. It is in route now in a plain brown box. Had my engine with new 91 octane fuel and Stabil in it quit again on Sunday so I pulled the plug and since I couldn't lay my hands on the spare I scrubbed it with a fine brass brush. Engine started on the second pull and after I ran all the fuel out of the internal lines and cab it smoothed out with no more problems. Although, I didn't take any chances and sailed into my slip upon returning to the marina. My thanks to all for their suggestions. I think my troubles are over.
