Keep some wood and make it shine

Each year boats, cars and houses move more to being nice generic appliances. User friendly but not very inspiring. A well kept boat with varnished trim reminds us allmost subliminally of our merritime history. Even non boaters standing on a dock admire a glossy boat and will comment "if I ever have a boat, it would be like that one". To me, boats are nice objects that help me enjoy nature with my friends. To have one that stands out as more than just a plastic raft, at the cost of a little elbow grease, is well worth the effort.

Another brag about Bristol

Our IP 38 had Bristol when we bought her. At that time it was 3 years old and had done as Alantic crossing and the Bahamas. With a little touch up it was still great after 6 years. I use it on my current boat up here in the Pacific NW and it has been 3 years now. The trick is to apply it in 75 to 80 degrees. It will have a pot life of 2 to 3 hours and will allow a good 3 to 4 coats. You apply repeat coats just after the last coat has lost its tacky feel.(about 20 to 25 min) Then there is no sanding between coats to remove the blush. We always applied 4 to 6 coats. Just don't try to cover more in a day than can be finished this way. Ray

re-read old boay rag

They said you will probably have to redo the coatings every year till you get 30 coats on. She thins the coatings after the first several coats (the second years application. She mentioned, and it happened to me, that the edges were not sealed and that is where the pealing is coming from. The resolve isn't changing paint, it is accepting that if you want brightwork, then this goes with the territory.
